Hi all
I need atmega dump Xprog-M.
Please help....
My Xprog only write device is client
Thanks
Check correct device port in environment options.
Press the update button, if window with authorisations shown, then firmware is ok. I think..
Check connection to chip. by the way, what chip you are trying to program?

Yes we shouldn't never expect any support from chinese sellers, once we pay it's a totally different attention.

COAX CABLE MUST BE MAX 12CM and all cable connections must be 100% OK, then you never get Error message.

This MCU is secured ,to read in circuit you need this:
$F3-$B1-$F3-$AB-$F3-$A5-$F3-$9F
( but can be another SS...)
and look in X-prog manual page 17
i think you have to read like MC68HC08AZ32
i allways use ETL, is the best for secured 908

Hi,
if you lift all the pins from PCB,
the only problem can be that you forgot to change
in programmer Option - Environment - Device
the value of Oscilator , X-Prog put this value for 2MHz osc
by default for this MCU
and you have there 4MHz so change this value to 4000000
and try again :)

Blue Mainboard look it's same as what i had..for that component i got a lm317 but not DIP, it's LP package.
In the direction from DIP socket to 5V regulator:
The Connection of each LM317 is (Output-Input-Adjust) lead to positive 47 Uf cap.

The blue PCB is mine xprog with LP package
The green is another PCB of xprog with D package.
According the pins of two packages there is a discordance!
What is your opinion about that?

Another xprog varians...hmmm anyone can confirmed which one is working and WHERE to buy ? Mine is V5.0 from ecutool, it can't run on V5.0 Software, the error " Windows can't access the specified device, path or file.." i had tried to reinstall it many time, turn off AVG(Win32/ Themida detected), Change USB cable, try at com port....still got a same error.
But on V 4.5 Software it can run and show me all authorized at Hardware Info.
I think no need to be confused by xprog mainboard varians.
Stick to the purposed of a pair of 317, one is supplying VCC and the other VPP.
You can observe by yourself, Input came out from Mosfet near 5v reg, and Adjust is controlled by Atmega, that is what i know.

With LP package, there are pins on board that are not used.
If I want to solder a D package instead of LP package, whats about the orientation of IC on board?
As you can see, the pins are different.

NOT POSSIBLE TO PUT D PACKAGE ON THE BLUE PCB! If there was not another blue, the blue pcb from ecutool has a totally wrong footprint for D package no matter how you orientate them. That why they put the LP packages in on the D package footprint. If both the blue and the green are yours you can check it out for the footprint differnce.

Your answer is in your post #574 photo1 & 3. At least it should be found that the the output pin of LP package is not connected to the centered four pads (D package output). The running copper line differences are underneath.
But, how did you find the Xprog not writing the chip. Is it like this (http://www.digital-kaos.co.uk/forums/f172/how-read-micro-mc68hc05b16-116577/index2.html)
If you need some check on HW power supplying, the ic in the red circle is dual p channel mosfet performing as supply switchs to 2xLM317. One for 12v another one should be 17v found on pin5,6(7,8) and 7,8(5,6). These voltages are found only when the programmer is operating otherwise the mosfet is broken. My case, mosfet/2 for the 17v channel was broken.

I've read on MC68HC05X32 datrasheet, that for programming it needs 15V on VPP6 pin. I measured all the voltages on specific xprog-m adapter with 0d69j and I didn't find any 15V. Only 5V and 8,7V.
Did you replace the mosfet and everything is OK now? Can you program 0D69J now?

silly question but did you have a 15v psu plugged into the xprog
I've try all possible combinations!
The 9V voltage comes on relative pins with USB power supply also. There are circuits that increase the voltage in xprog.

yes but from what i know it is important that you have 15v power supply connected when you need good steady voltage hence why i always have my psu always plugged in then there should be no risk of voltage dip

@ Elnet
Once I tried to remove 32 Mhz xtall , and then run the software, under hardware info it can show me all info and authorization, that xtall is clocking lattice only, so i think this is the way to know atmega is working or not. What software version you used ? please post the info/datasheet for smd transistor, mine is using code A4W, IE , SN / 5N , A4 & 2A.
@ Papalos
It is from linear technology mine is mark 636 beside the main cap, dc dc converter it can boost usb 5 to 12v but it can’t draw more than 500ma, Teerak is right….you need external psu connected.

I check the voltage on pins 5,6,7,8. It's 12,27V and 17,76V.
What the hell is up here???

I recive from ecutool a 5.0 version, blue PCB, but this time I get a bad one. I can read/write !2C and MW eeprom but i must repeat action few times untill job it's done, Silent Device message are display all the time. For me is just for testing , but i'm imagine how disappointed are other people.
:ridinghorse:
I think a half of mosfet area IC are broken , I replaced it with IC from 4.5 V good one, without succes. Now the voltages are good but i can't read any HC05 mcu (x32, B32). I don't try it on others mcu yet.

Of course smd transistor used at xprog blue pcb , maybe I?m wrong, i recall you said.. had check/verify all the res, cap, transistor. I think it?s hard for that atmega dump it's locked, like 9s12 had x-gate.

What the message does show when not writing
MC68HC05X32 mask 0D69J or 1H52A with programming adapter 1-002-0005. I choose white file
, security bypass is done and when it starts to write i got error message "write error", Continue?Yes-Yes All-no.
When I choose yes, the error appears again. When I choose yes all, it hangs and remain at the last percentage.

If you can read it and found that $00 = FFh the MCU is unsecured, it can now be programmed in circuit. If not sure, try with Vpp1 left on the 0005 adapter

Thank you mate! :congrats:
Your method works!!!
Steps:
1. Read MCU & save the dump
2. Lift Vpp1 pin, select file you want to write, press write
3. And the end of writing process and before start security bypass, connect back(with a cable) the vpp1 back or untick write+verify in write mode

Don't use that adapter it's not correct. I've tryed it and in the adapter VPPr is conected and the 705X32 doesn?t need it. I've used a QFP64 adapter and made the conections one by one with the use of a 8Mhz oscilator conected in adapter, but the writing errors still appear, but could verify it at least two times ok, but don't verify it after write verify it with the comand verify later.

3rd November, 2010, 03:22 AM
Maybe some more people including me experienced with this problem with the blue board. I found two possible HW points which could generate the problem and if you'd like to do checking yourself.
IRF7316 full or partial broken (photos in this thread, post #581), put volt meter to pin 7,8 and GND then hit 'read' button (no device). You will get 17-18v shortly only when the programmer is running then halt. If voltage is present all the time this IRF7316/2 is broken. It's good to do the same too to pin 5,6 and the result should be the same but 12v.
LT1072 switching regulator degraded (photo in post #590, soic 8 pins), run help> hardware info...(no device). At this point the programmer should still work fine because this checking command uses less current. As a small 8 pin EEPROM use less current to perform reading (better 93Cxx), try to read it throgh the 8 pin socket and see what happen. Further checking needs to totally remove the board and put it upside down to check for the voltage on the bottom side.
When 'vpp pin overoladed' come up, did it give a gentle audible oscilated noise in the box?
nzlockie
3rd November, 2010, 09:31 PM
Definately no audible noise whatsoever coming from the box.
When I run hardware info, it communicates just fine. I get a response telling me I am authorised for everything.
Tried reading a ST 24C08 through 8 pin socket and it generates the same error. VPP overloaded.
Tested voltage on the pins you mentioned and it performs just like you said it would. It jumps up to 17-18v for a brief second on 7,8 and 11-12 on 5,6. The voltage drops away as soon as the error message comes up. (which is pretty much straight away.)
Thanks again!

OK!
All fixed. Thanks to Zmann, I found one of the capacitors was rated too low. It had died and was a dead short. Replaced it with one rated for the correct voltage and problem solved!
Here is a shot identifing the guilty party. This guy is rated for 16v but as Zmann has pointed out, it will be getting spikes of up 18v.
I have replaced it with one rated for 25v.
Hope this helps someone else, because I imagine ALL the blue board X-progs are like this. Certainly all the ones in pictures posted in THIS thread are.
Zmann
4th November, 2010, 06:32 AM
Exactly the same problem point as one post before. This is the only line on the board that handled that highest volatge, 17-18 volts, no where else. The capacitor should have the voltage rate to tolerate this potential. The original 16v 4.7uF is crazy. I got a spare in stock and changed mine to 35v but 25v should be fine, only one to this position.

Been using my clone xprog-m via USB , for around 12 months on few devices it gave write errors, but after re-writing always finished succesfully. This morning thought id try it on rs232 serial port, on tms370 now using rs232 lead instead of USB and using 12v external power supply, writes near enough perfectly every time.
So far tested on tms370, which was the worst for write errors, and my 2 clone xprog-m,s (blue pcb from ecutool).
Just thought id share my experience with you guys and will hopefully help someone.

Hey friends, how are you?
As you can see, I have been in the background reading, reading and reading again in order to understand all my needs.
Now it's time to buy the programmer, (I post some time ago in this thread asking for help on that matter) and now after the v4.5 to v5 upgrade revolution I'm going for a xprog-m v5 clone.
But argggg, after having read the 45 thread pages I'm still confused about where to buy it, last posts about bad blue pcbs are not something goog.
So, I have to choose , and please help me a bit:
- ecutool (http://www.ecutool.com/productshow.asp?id=2057&sortsid=3515&sorts=), ummm latest buys says that blue pcb with caps shorted and such things
- odbauto (http://obdauto.com/views.asp?hw_id=664)
- ecukey (http://ecukey.com/ProductShow.asp?ID=122)
- ebay sellers ...
Any recomendation or advice agaist any?
Anyone knows if some of them have the green pcb?
That's all, thanks in advance and happy Christmas.

Hi friends,
I had just received (two days ago) the XPROG-m v5 that I ordered last week from ecutool, and here are my first impressions:
First of all it is the blue pcb one, this pcb seems to be more probelmatic than the green one (the lm317 and capacitors ...) but who can choose.
Second, a few bended pins on some connectors/adaptors (see attached images), nothing that can be repaired (someone played football with it?).
Third, this unit have the tantalum capacitors replaced by electrolytic smt capacitors, rated higher than the tantalum ones, 35v 4.7uF, these will prevent some capacitors fireworks :).
There still are the LM317 "D" adjustable voltage regulators, a bit "ugly soldered".
For that moment the only thing I had tested is that there exists communication with the device and if it recognizes the full authorization set.
Tomorrow I'm going to try some eeproms to see if it works (more or less).
Cheers, Mashu

Well the ecutool xprom-m lasted only for one use :(, maybe it is one time use :D :D :D.
Last Friday I tried to do an autoliv airbag unit with a 9508 eeprom and when I try to read it, it makes an strange noise, like if there is a faulty capacitor, arrrgggggg, after a lot of "silent device" it did a good read, but who tries to write and mess the real content ...
Today when I arrive home I'm going to open it and try to find the faulty component and check some voltages...
My nightmare begins, this is like an Russian roulette but with eight bullets :).
I'll keep you informed about my findings....

Hi again, I did some measurements on the board.
As Zmann says on post #611 (page 41), I checked the IRF7316 having when the programmer is idle 17.9v on pins 1,2 and near 0v on 7 and 8. Also 12.3v on 3 and 4 pins and near 0v on pins 5,6.
When I hit read on device programmer desktop the outputs of the two mosfets seems to be ok, near 18v on pin 7&8 and 12v on 3&4. The bi-color led starts green and then red, and then a vibrating sound appears until the window "Device is silent" apears and I close it. While that window is open the voltages are which I said on the mosfets outputs also the vibrating sound.
I had observed too that some components get hot, not very hot but very hot for that short working time. They are marked magenta on the attached picture. What component is under the question mark?
Also it seems that the dc/dc isolator is not tightly soldered, I'm going to check that. And as I said in a previous message the capacitors under the lm317 are 35v rated, maybe any is broken?, I really don't know.
Have someone any idea about what will the problem be? (I'm trying to read a 95160 eeprom (also happens with a 95080, that was successfully read last week (no noise on the box).
Thanks in advance for your support.
Regards Machu.

Hi cosmin12345,
I had been talking with Zmnan, and after some tests the programmer doesn't have a repetitive behavior. After many measures with the multimeter it starts reading ok, writing with external power supply, and sometimes the strange sound disappears. Now it doesn't makes any sound.
Our conclusion is that the LT1072 is faulty/broken/degraded, as is used as step-up voltage converter and there is only 4.7v on the positive leg of the 220uF electrolytic capacitor, and it must be 12v.
So I ordered some LT1072 in order to change that, also Zmnan suggested me that if I can't find this part I could try the LT1172 as used in the green pcb version of xprog-m.
I can't have access to the scope until that weekend, so I'll report the measurements over the 95160.
In the meantime a mate near my location sell a green-pcb xprog, so I decided to buy it (more expensive that mine) for doing the stuff I need. Late when I receive the replacement parts and the xprog was repaired I'll try to sell it to someone interested in (making sure that it works perfectly).
That's all, I'll post the measurements and some pics about the new programmer.
Thanks, and best regards. Mashu.
( I also wants to give thanks to Zmnan for his kind and friendly support, thanks mate)

The problem on blue PCB's IRQ voltage is not 10V but max 8.5 so is not enought ( look at datasheet of motorola for specific device ). So you must repair adjustment circuit in LM317 which supply IRQ ( Vpp ) voltage to set exact needed voltage.
All problem will go away ..

Here we go...
For all DK members for free how to fix XprogM blue PCB problem
if it not work good HC05 and HC705 MCU.
First measure IRQ when you hit read or write to see if mod need and if need here is picture how do that...
Start with 1K5 and measure IRQ voltage without HC05 adapter just hit READ and measure if voltage is little bigger
example 10.4V then you need 1k5 + 100 ohm in serie to get 1k6 and again measure...
When you measure from 9.5 V to maximum 10V you is in range.
Usual XprogM usage VppR for IRQ - that is Vpp from LM317 via 4K7 internal resistor.
So you can easy measure Vpp in programing progress .So Vpp will be little highter then VppR cos VppR drop voltage on 4k7 resistor about 50 mV or so ...
If you measure Vpp = 9.75V VppR will be about 9.17V...
>>> Next I will remove linear stabilizer for 5V and replace with some better or maybe DC-DC one. On LM stabilizer is too much heating...
Conclusion is on china XprogM is to many low cost part's ...
That is all...

The Vppr voltage are used on various devices at least found on both HC05 and HC08. Xprog-m has no dedicated Vpp voltage control for different devices. HC08 needs this Vpp of max. 9 volts on IRQ pin. I would pay attention on HC08 mode as well when doing modification.
When people said Xprog-m 'not writing' on HC05, were they meaning on security mode? If yes, it is different issue.

Look on motorola datasheet all motorola MCU for IRQ usage Vdd X 2 ...
So no place in datasheet precise Vpp on IRQ pin !
Cos some devices work on 5V Vdd and need 10V Vpp , and devices which usage 3.3V need 6.6V on IRQ..
So you cant say 9V ...
Simple is Vpp ( IRQ ) = Vdd X 2 that all.
And I know to XprogM cant do security HC05B16 cos it need full different configuration like in ETL to go to bootstrap special mode jump to desired address etc etc ...
But it is different story ...

I cant find on any HC08 datasheet say the Vpp on IRQ pin being 'Vddx2' neither ! But mostly the instructions are the IRQ input voltage of Vdd+4V as maximum rating.
So I can say 9v.
Some device of HC'9'08 can be found as Vdd+4.5v as the maximum rating, those should be far from problem to the modification of 9volts++

Also here is original data from HC08AZ32 datasheet.
So if Vdd = 5V ( oas you say 4.5V ) but never 4V ...
Motorola give IRQ = Vdd + VHI ( where we all know to HI level is Vdd ) so VHI must be from 4.5V to 5V which give IRQ = 9.5V-10V but we can usage 9 without problem cos 4V as VHI is also high logic level 100%.
But we cant say to 8V is good value as is in blue PCB so ...

I did not say Vdd 4.5v, to mark out Vddx2 of 9v. No Vddx2 story in HC08 literatures but always refered as Vdd + something. :D
I disagree to hold Vpp at 8v neither and 100% agree to this modification. Ive made major modifications on my blue board too as well as a successful test on 'HC05 security adapter not writing problem'. Just pointing out that the setting Vpp to or close to 10v may break over some HC08 device IRQ maximum rating.
In the more up-to-date original Motorola HC08 documents, IRQ (and not as IRQ1 from the 1997 doc.) maximum IRQ voltage always presents in Maximum Ratings table as below samples e.g. HC08AZ32, AZ60 and AS60 at Vdd+4v and some other at Vdd+4.5v.

Wrong reading of resistor , it is 182 = 1k8 !
It is rotated 180 degree in soldering process...
With 280 ohm you will read on IRQ 16V " DANGER " .
On standard LM317 circuit it is recommended to be 270 ohm but here is different....
So with 1k5 + 100 ohm connected in series on his place it will be UNLOADED exact 9.85V and with load 9.5V which is perfect.

After you modified that resistor , is there any side effect for other mpu except hcxx??
The resistor effect only on HCXX.
So if any other trick or type please other member's to write as help to all of as here.

You did not say what the ECU type, that should be IAW 8Pxx in PSA car which contains mc68hcp11a1vfn. I read/write this ECU/MCU with Xprog-m (clone) with no problem without any pin lift. The devices in menu either HC11A1(C11W) or HC11A8-old (set to 8000000hz) works no difference.

What is the difference between a resistor labeled 151 152 154? Basically, what does the last number mean, and can I use a 154 or 151 instead of 152? I have some 151 and 154 and they both are sold as 150K resistor.
Thanks!

It goes like this !!! 151=150 which means it's 15 and the 1 representing the number of zero's after the 15,so 152=1500 to get the proper value you have to say 1500 divided by 1000 and the 1000 meaning KILO(1000) so this resistor would be 1,5kilo ohms.
154=150000 so this would be 150kilo ohms(150k) etc etc
Hope i explained it as simple as possible since i am not a lecturer, and if not understood fire away.

Thanks! I understand what you are saying. Bottom line is I need 1500 and that would be 152! 154 would be way too much voltage drop then, and 151 not enough.
I want to do like one of the other users above did and make the blue pcb xprogm stronger. We don't have an electronics store close by so i was trying to go through old SRS control units and ECUs to find the parts I need with no luck ...
And then comes the hard part, learning how to actually connect to the chips lol. I'm pretty smart and technical, but I have 0 experience reading any chips other than removing a simple 8-pin soic and reading it out of circuit. Unfortunately, there isn't much info (or people aren't willing to give info) on how to actually read the chips in circuit. I'm getting a little worried because I see some people who claim they never do in-circuit programming because of the dangers. And on top of that I have a blue PCB xprogm so there are so many variables for me to overcome. If I can't read a chip, it could be the programmer or me not knowing what I am doing, or me having burned something in circuit :banghead: I guess it wouldn't be fun if it were easy right?

The resistor you need should be 153 that gives you 15k plus a 102 which is 1killo ohm connect them in series(inline)then combined they will give you 16k

Ok now I am confused. I'm not confused with the math, but with the mod itself. The original resistor that the blue pcb has is 182. So this is 1.8K or 1800 ohms. User elchip in post #699 on page 47 says to use 152 +100 in series to make 1600 ohms. But in his picture attached to his post, he instructs only to change the 182 to 152, so that makes it 1500 ohms, not 1600. But you are saying to do 153, which is 15,000 ohms plus 102, which is 1000 ohms, for a total of 16K? Wouldn't that lower the voltage too much? Also, is there even any room to put two resistors in series?
In Zmann's post, #707 page 48, he also uses 152 in place of the 182 (so 1.5K). I don't see any other resistors added? Also, I am trying to figure out what other mods he made. I see he changed the capacitors, but not sure if his are stronger than the ones that came with mine. I have some of the small yellow ones that I think are weak, but the ones near the 152 resistor are silver barrel style caps.
Also, I am trying to figure out which style LM317 he used. I googled it and see there are many different styles, with some being adjustable (not sure what that means). Any idea which lm317 I should buy? There are LM317LDR2, LM317LBDR2G, LM317LBDG, LM317LDR2G and so on ...

BTW, if you didn't figure it out already, device is silent probably means you don't have the com port set up properly, either the device driver itself, or the setting in the xprogm software. Make sure the USB drivers are installed correctly, make sure you see the USB COM driver show up in your device manager, and then go to Environment settings (or something like that, trying to remember from memory) in the Xprog software and select the right com port.
Device is silent for me meant the software was not communicating with the programmer, not that it wasn't reading the chip.
I originally got the same error as you. I noticed that the xprogm software resets this setting, and that also the device doesn't sometimes show properly. I resolved this by disconnecting and reconnecting the Xprog USB, and also reselecting the proper COM port device in the Xprog software.
After I got that setup, I tried reading an 8pin 93xx46 chip in circuit. At first I got pin errors. I played with the connections by moving them a little, and then it read fine! Now to learn how to do MCUs in-circuit .... Does anyone know if they HAVE to be done in circuit, or should I always remove them? I seem to remember someone saying that the MCUs with encryption have to be done in-circuit? Otherwise you can't access the memory? Is this true? I think I prefer to remove the chips when possible because I realized today how hard using test clips are to get a good connection.

All of LM317's are the type of an adjustable voltage regulator IC. I made in a post possibily in this threat saying that 'THE TWO LM317 TO-92 PACKAGE USED IN THE BLUE XPROG-M CANNOT BE REPLACED WITH LM317 SOIC8 PACKAGE' like used in the green PCB unless the PCB lines are modified like mine, wrong lining in the blue PCB for SOIC8 package!
Resistor of 1.8 Kohm (between 1.5 and 1.8 K) is one of the voltage adjusting elements, typically should be a potentiometer (adjustable resistor) but here after well calculated they used fixed resistor of 1.8 Kohm. If only one SMD resistor of 1.6 Kohm (type 0805) is prefered as a replacement, I found that it's also available but may need slight effort to find them.
The blue Xprog in the photo is of the later built which they already replaced the small yellow and under rated tantalum capacitors with electrolytic capacitors of 35V rating (silver barrel).
