    USB TO SERIAL CONVERTER

    Hi all,

I just brought a usb to serial cable converter. Due to the output is male too. So i also brought the 'gender' converter.

But when i try using dreamup v1.331. It refuse to connect and it keep hang on 'switching dreambox ON now'.

What is the problem? Is it the 'gender' converter that cause DMbox to failure connection to the PC?

Btw, i had change all the setting to COM1 and it is not been used on COM1. Under my PC setting device manager, it show COM 1 is working well and no conflict or error shown?

Should i buy a 'female' null cable to connect to the usb converter?

    Pls advice, thanks.

Try using different versions of dreamup software.

          Dreambox is not a modem.
Directly plug in a serial connection won't help.
Treat this dreambox like another PC, and you would need a null modem cable to communicate with it.

Null modem is a female-to-female serial cable, where the data TX/RX connection is crossed.
(Pin 2 and Pin 3 crossed)

You may find many female-to-female 9-pin cable, but don't blindly buy from visual identification, you may ended up with a 9-pin female-female Data-Switch cable where the RX/TX pins are straight thru. Always ask the shopkeeper for a null modem cable, if he doesn't know, find another shop.

if you accidentally bought a Data-Switch cable by mistake, try to skin one end of the cable near the head, identify the pair of RX/TX pin, and cut their wire off and switch connection and re-soldered (or re-wired securely).

This effort with save you few bucks.

Yup.. quite a number of them. Suntronics of SLT & SLS had them. if you wish to get from SLT, take the escalator, at the topmost level, the shop adjacent to the escalator had them for SGD$4.00, well-labelled, you won't get the wrong cable.

Yes, i got it $4.00 and it is able to detect the DM ~!

But when i backup my current imagine file. The extension is just *file only. How come? Or i shall rename its backup file to *img?

Anyone encounter this problem during backup the image file?

Just rename the backup file to .img will do.

When do a backup using dreamup, make sure you name the file as file_name.img & not just file_name only.

Best is that you backup again just incase the previous file you backup & add the extension does not work.

Oh ok, but before i save the file name, the below extension put *img. But after backup, the backup file no extension.

                      Hmm, software issue?

Altot it indicate below as .img format, the save as will still need to be in backup.img format. Give it a try.

For me, I always like to save my backup as date.img (i.e: 20110425.img) so I know which is latest.
