    Need help.

I am very sorry to ask but i am completely new to this stuff. I bought my dreambox 500C 2 months ago and it worked fine. Was promised that it would be re-flashed for free if anything went wrong.

Now th chap wants ?25 per box. Obviosly i am a bit peeved off.

What i have got is a null modem cable. Can some one please tell me if this cable is enough or if i need an Cross over Ethernet Cable, and if so, what size cable.

Can someone also tell me what program i am supposed to install as everything i read seems to be flying over my head.

I will seriously appreciate any help and apologise if i have caused any offense but submitting this topic.

    Many thanks you good people.

You sound like you might have been on other forums and been eaten alive mate!

We're very 'newbie' friendly on this forum, so we welcome your questions.

You can fix the box with the null modem cable if you download DREAMUP and the new updated version of DW2.0, this will get your machine auto-updating again, you can then do a manual channel scan to get all your channels back onto the box.

I recommend that you purchase a network cable (cross-over if you do not have a router installed), this'll allow you to make smaller changes to your machine, and will infact allow you to fix it WITHOUT needing the serial (null modem) and going through the entire reflash process.

The length of the network cable is not important.

If you just want to fix your box then buy a network cable and download Flash FXP

If you want to fix your box without having to buy anything then download Dreamup and then download a new image, then scan for channels - as you can probably tell, your much better off just buying the network cable!

YOu only need one or the other, so the choice is 1) null modem cable 2) cross over network cable.
network cable never work 100% with image falshing. Stick with null modem cable and dreamup.
a cross over network cable require deeper understanding in setting up IP address. Your problem mostly down to the IP setup; 1) setup a static IP address for each device (ie; PC- 100.0.0.2, Dbox 100.0.0.3 with mask set to 255.255.255.0 and gateway fro both to be 100.0.0.1). setting your PC IP address without full understanding of such method may cause big trouble for the PC to go on internet afterward.
                2) Use another program DCC to do flash.

I would highly recommend using just the null modem cable and dreamup as this is the easest way no Ip config, plug and run switch on and off at the right time all things is done.

Unless u are using a router on the network do not use a gateway adresss !, as the two machines supplied with the above information will be able to see each other, while the Gw address should not hinder communications between the two machines, I have seen comms problems when a non existant gw has been used on the setup.

The box may have went read only and you may be best to re flash a new image.

If you do have to re flash then try and copy your service, bouquet and cable folder to your pc so you can just reload them after reflash.

Sorry m8, I don't know the answer to that one, in fact I don't even know if its possible if it has went read only, but I was only guessing it may have went read only, someone smarter may shed some light on it.

TBH with you, if I was you I would start from scratch and put on a new image, then transfer new roms and services etc etc. It will learn you a lot and really is quite easy.
