I thought that you could not attach an internal HDD to a 500. I know the 600 can have a HDD.

Yip...the DM500 doesn't have any capabilites for an internal hdd. You can however connect a NAS to it if you have a LAN caddy, i.e. external hdd wth ethernet connection. But it's not straight forward and the recordings aren't great compared to the DM600, and you don't get timeshift and things like that.
Best bet is to get a DM600 for that kind of thing.Comment

Thanks for that info Devil fish. I'd actually be quite interested in setting up recording via a LAN caddy for a bit of a project as long as the recordings are watchable i.e not out of sink and looking like someones coverd the telly screen in "I can believe its not butter".
