    dm800 external hdd

Hi Guys, Bought a external 2.5" 250gb HDD for my dm800, its a plug n play model (usb) that requires no AC adaptor,
when i plug it in, the dm800 doesn't recognise it and the hdd beeps!!
any ideas on whats going on??

I should add that the Hdd works perfectly on my PC and Lappy with no beeping!!

Hi mate.. in this case the HDD required alot of power .. generally which the pc can provide. In this case your box is not able to provide enough power to the HDD to spin properly. A better option would be a HDD with external power.

Yes i received that in the box mate,
Unfortunately the external harddrive i have is usb only, and has no external power, and as Ramghariaboyz said the dm800 doesnt seem to have enough power to spin it properly

                hello
Try to search for the schematic for the USB .. find out the Positie and negative connection and attach 5v regulated battry or adopter wit it and rest of the 2 wires are for data transfer...

hope u understand and it helps.

Wow.. yes mate i understand, do you think it'll work?

The cable i got with the hdd is a Y cable USB 2.0 A to Mini B (main & aux)
Is it possible to get a plug in adapter and connect the aux usb to it so that it gives the hdd extra power??

The only other option I can think is to power it with 2 usb ports. You can get 2 -> 1 usb cables. Provided you have 2 usb ports on the box.. but again it might not work. Get a self powered usb HDD .. much easier than opening things apart !

There are two usb ports on the dm800, but they are so close together that only one can be used at any one time!! How ~~~~in stupid is that on a box thats retailing at about ?420?

Anyway i took all advice on board and got a powered 4 port usb hub and plugged the aux usb into it, then plugged the main usb into the dm800 and it worked perfectly

Thanks to you all who helped out.
