    DM500 Problems with root

    Hello,

Recently I have bought a dreambox and now I want to start playing with the different kind of settings, but I don't have root access. The person who I have bought it from has changed the default login and settings, respectively "root" and "dreambox". Also the tuxbox addon has been removed so I can't use this addon to get the default login settings back. The tuxbox folder is on the dreambox, but it seems to be empty: but maybe I'm not approaching it in the right way so can anyone give a detailed decribtion in how they approached tuxbox.

So to install a proper tuxbox addon I can't use ftp, I have also tried using telnet, but it also asks for the root account name and password and when I try to download the addon from the original gemini server I get unknown error 2 on my screen. So what to do now?

I have also tried this link, but this also didn't work: I stumbled at step 4 on the dreambox part: How to Change ROOT Password even when TUXBOX is Password protected - Satlover Forums

And I really don't want to completely flash my dreambox, because my parents are also using the box.

**Also is there a way to backup the dreambox without having root access, because that might help me out. Since I can always use this backup when I **** up.

I also can't contact the person I bought the dreambox anymore, because he didn't want to give me the password and lives pretty far away from me so I can't beat it out of him!

    Please help...

use DreamUP software to connect to box via serial com port and press Backup button to save an image of box to your PC. This image can then be flashed back to box to restore it to its current state.

You can do a backup with Dreamup. I did see an app on UKCVS forums some time ago to open a backup on a PC, I don't think you could change the passwd file but you should be able to extract anything you need before re-flashing with an un-protected image.
