Yeah works fine, you just need the vlc 0.85/0.86 installation.

it works fine for me, have had to upgrade and downgrade my vlc on occasions on my lappy. The 500 is known for being a bit flakey with streaming.. but many get it to work on..

If you can't get VLC or webtv to work then try dreambox viewer which is available at post No.4 in the link below.

VLC can be a temperamental git at times but that works everytime for me.
