DM800 Dreambox newbie from Singapore having recording issue

    Hi all experts,

I recently got a Dreambox DM 800 HD PVR.

Viewing the Starhub channel is fine. The problem I am having is with regards to recording.

I got a 2.5 inche HDD, format it as NTFS and got it initialise and mount with no issue. I tried to perform a timer recording by going into the information page and select add timer. After which I set it up to do a 5mins recording.

Just when the recording is about the start, dreambox gave this information "In order to record a timer, the TV was switched to the recording service!". After about 5 mins, I checked the PVR page but there are no recordings. Tried it for a couple of times but still no success.

I hope some of you out here can enlighten me on the process and what have I done wrong & could not perform any recording.

    Thank you.

Any sort of help would be very much appreciated.

    Regards,
    Gab

      Hi uu161,

      Thank you for the reply.

Hmmm, what I did is format my HDD in NTFS and the let the dreambox initialise. After which I just mount it and use the default path given.

Ok, I will try to post some screenshots after work.

Once u initialize the hdd, create a movie folder and then mount it. If done correctly, it will automatically mount the hdd to media/hdd and u can use the default recording path.

          i did the following -

          01) use DCC to create this folder inside my ext drive ---> /movie
          02) set permission of this folder to '777'
          03) set the recording path to /media/hdd/movie

note - my hdd is ext2 format. i guess NTFS should be similar.

          hope this helps.

All the above steps are done on the dreambox?

I have tried recording using an external usb 2.5"hdd formatted in NTFS.

                  1. just format the hdd using a pc
                  2. once done, manually create a folder called 'movie' in the root directory. no need to set permission.
                  3. plug it into the dm800
                  4. create mount point & ensure the recording path is to the movie folder of yr hdd, not somewhere else.

Note: if u 'initialise' the hdd, dm800 will format the hdd to ext2/ext3 file system. if u wanna verify this statement, plug the hdd back to yr pc/notebook. it'll tell u the drive isn't formatted coz windows can't read ext2/ext3. if u wanna maintain NTFS file system, don't initialise.

                  just some thoughts:
the dm800 is basically a linux box. it deals better with ext2/ext3 file system than NTFS. I haven't been getting good results recording onto NTFS formatted hdds. I used NTFS coz I wanted to copy the recordings onto my other PCs. Sometimes (like 2 - 3 times a week), the box wud hang in the middle of a recording & a reboot was required for it to function again.

I have recently set it up to record to a NAS (network access storage). the hdds are formatted to ext2 format. no failed recordings & no system hang so far since 2 mths ago.

so, if u don't have intention to copy the recordings to somewhere else, it is better u go with edlimym's suggestion than sticking to NTFS. personally, i do have another worry though - which is the extra power required & heat generated by the hdd. not sure if these wud cause the box to hang. anyway, it is worth a try.

                  good luck!

Install Ext2 File System Driver for Windows to read ext2/ext3 formatted devices on your PC. With this driver, you can also create the movie directory on the ext2/ext3 device in your PC and there is no need to set the permission on this directory for the recording to work.

Sorry to hijack this thread. Did anyone is able to record HD movies using NAS? All my HD recording is either hang or the timer has went out of sync during recording. I am using DM800SE with frontprocessor 3. I have already installed the ntp software to patch the time but still having time issue only when recording.

Erm, I am a noob at this but how do I go about connecting the PC to the dreambox to use DCC to create the folder and set permission?

                        So sorry.

I will try the different and see which one works best for me over the weekend.

                              Hi all,

Thank you for guiding me step by step for the recording "issue" that I had faced.

Now I am able to get the recordings done.. Yay~!

2 more questions that I seek some understanding from all the pros here,

                              1. let's say in the future, Starhub decides to add more channels to their service, will those new channels be added automatically or do I have to maybe download the bouquets from this website and install it on my own?

                              2. Am I able to view those on-demand channels without paying?

                              Thank you all.
