    How to clone DM500C

Pardon me as I'm a noob.

My friend has a DM500C that works with my cable operator.

I tried to backup his DM500C using Dreamup and then flash it on my DM500C but when I plug in the cable, I got this error message after it tried to scan:

"all known transponders have been tried but no lock was possible"

Did I do a correct cloning or is there other files that I need to take care of?

Use the backup and restore commands in this post.
Also, if you are from a different area to your mate, you will have to rescan the services.

    Real men have FTTH.

If for "cloning" you mean you want to back up the image on your friend's box and flash in into yours you have to:
      1) create a back up image of your friend's image
      2) flash your friend's image into your box
for both operation you can use Telnet, the link is in the post above.

In order to do that you/your M8 will need to be able to connect with the DB either with a cross over cable (direct connection from PC to BD) or via router with a standard ethernet cable. Easy guide are available as sticky post in the dreambox's section.
Alternatively if your mate uses the DK image I think you can back up the image using the the DB remote control directly.
      I hope this help

i tested both on the same area with the same cable but mine just doesn't work.

I did both backup and flash it using a null modemn cable (serial port).

Is there any difference between flashing with null modemn cable via dreamup or using the command prompt in telnet?

Did you say yes to the last flash erase? If so you will be left with a raw image m8.

I always tend to go with telnet. Its quicker, and then resort to DreamUp when things go tits up !

No it's the same in the sense that both methods create a back up image. Deamup is a litle trickier
I am also a newbie and for fun I have tried both methods. The telnet one is definitely faster plus you do not have to worry when you flash the image back.
If it's get too confusing why don't just start from scratch and:

            1) flash the Dk1.1 image into your box (do a flash erase to delete the existing content)
            2) do a scan of the channels (brute force for UK)
            2) apply the "fix" via FTP
            3) go to Sky one and reboot
