Recently started looking into this 'hobby'. Am trying to make an informed decision before I commit into making my 1st purchase.
After days of reading this forum, using google and reading, I find that there is a ton of many different hardware boxes. Always, Dreambox is the most popular, so I guess my choice is made.
Looking at comparison PDF on http://www.dream-multimedia-tv.de/, I understand the differences of the various models. However these originals (using official retailers in DE, GB and CH) are easily twice the price of China clones.
On China clones, availability is limited to only 2-3 models: DM500, DM800 & DM800SE. You can forget the (bigger) 7xxx and 8xxx series.
Given this situation, I choose DM800SE.
Next comes software. There is a ton of different firmware images. However, unlike in Linux circles, there is no proper development cycle, so there is no changelog, no info on what is different, no validation that there is no malware in the binary image.
Hence when I found openpli.org, I like it immediately. This is similar to OpenWRT in the community of WRT54G/Wifi-AP - among a sea on firmware images, comes a community of developers, using proper (and accountable) development practices to come out with a community supported firmware.
Given this situation, I choose Openpli.
The above is what I've found thus far. Am I off in any area?
