    Null modem cable question

What is a null modem cable and where does it goe? Does it connect to my laptop so I can flash a newer image? Never heard of one. Heard of RJ45 cable like what you get on back of a router.

null cable is a very common used lead that is used to put new firmware on almost every boxes available. the only drawback now a days is all new lappy do not have a serial port.

Will the lead work if convertd to a usb adapter and then plugged ito my laptop and dreambox mate, or will I have to do something else?
