coaxial cable like plugs into back of tv,that cable is needed before router to scan on vm as without it you cant scan.

a sat or cable box dont work on internet alone as they need 2 feeds a cable feed to scan and internet to decrypt,not sure if an internet box will work for you on phone line but it should hopefully others can advise better.

they may have assumed you have a vm feed?

all I was told was set it up to my dish and router and set up my own server and away I go

its a 500c mate

500c is for vm cable
5000s is for satelite

there were 3 dm 500 models each doing a different service as said above your box is a c

dm500c only worked on vm cable
dm 500s you need a sat dish
dm500t you needed an aerial on roof/think non working now because of digital changeover.

it does look like you maybe wasting your time on an old box only to get a few channels.

have another look are you sure it says 500 c or 500s,even hooking upto tv what does it say for scanning in the menu guides?
