    DM500 So confused! i want to buy a 500C

okay guys, i've looked through this forum for about 4/5 hours non stop. I have used the search function with no luck. I was looking at either the eurovox or the dreambox. I've decided to go for the dreambox 500c as it seems to be cheaper and easier to set up? but the question is where can i buy one from? dvb seller I have read nothing bad reviews. Uk sellers are charging 150...So I dont know what to do now? I want one from a uk seller if possible, or Shall i just go for the eurovox? I just want something that is really easy to set up and that I cant mess up!

p.s. I would say I have a bit of pc knowledge I know how to FTP/Telenet and flash iphones..

Before you decide which box you are going to buy you need to decide wether you just want to watch tv or fiddle about with your box and you also need decide your budget. I have had a eurovox and dm500c so I know what I am talking about when it comes to cable boxes. The dm500c is much harder to configure and manage compared to your eurovox but then you can do so much more with the dm500 compared to the eurovox.

As Curious said, Eurovox is best if you want something easy to set up.

      THE TRUTH
      The Hillsborough Independent Panel. 12/09/12

Today's report is black and white. The Liverpool fans were not the cause of the disaster.
The panel has quite simply found 'no evidence' in support of allegations of 'exceptional levels of drunkenness, ticketlessness or violence among Liverpool fans' and 'no evidence that fans had conspired to arrive late at the stadium' and 'no evidence that they stole from the dead and dying'.

At the end of the day, having researched this for a while now too, it seems that some amount of interfacing / software configuring will be required for all boxes. There is nothing hard about connecting a null modem serial cable to a dreambox and running FTP or TELNET from a PC to connect to it. All the images and tools are readily provided from these kind people so its just a small learning curve to get the thing doing whatever you want it to do.

I'm sticking with the DM500C because it is open source and there will be more support / less time to wait for updates when needed. I'm not bothering with the DM600C because I dont think I would need to record programs often (600 comes with IDE interface so you can install a laptop drive) and if I need to, I can do so with the 500C redirected to a PC.

Box prices vary from around ?40 (from China) to around ?100 ready configured here in the UK. Shouldnt pay any more than that. Best get one from an established online shop and avoid independant sellers (like those on EBAY) as there is no guarantee they will support you after purchase.

All boxes sold are clones now. Try to get one with an original Philips tuner to avoid the need for a signal booster and stay away from the ENIGMA images unless it clearly says that it is safe for use (e.g. use the NO BOMB version). Safest image to use is the DK1.1 but there are others.

To setup a new box, connect serial cable to a pc, upload chosen image, execute install of same via Telnet (see tutorials), apply November patch (if necessary) and plug it directly into your main cable port (before any splitters) to scan the frequencies. Avoid using ethernet for this as others report it fails often. See all the stickies for more info.

If you have got the dk image on it than I would say you are better off sticking with it rather than trying to get another image onto your box.
