DM800 help with dreambox 800 se hd and streaming to another location /countrty

hello , dreds here , thanks for looking .. I have a few questions regarding my dreambox and accessing viewing from another location /country , just wondering if someone informative on this great site could point me in the right direction

As the title suggests i am interested in accessing my dreambox and channels from another location/country. I have looked into a slingbox if this is an option .
The problem i may have is i subscribe to a service and im wondering if i will be able to do this or will my provider have a problem with this ?
Also i have looked into the vlc option , but it seems i would need to either be at the location where the dreambox is , or on the same network ,
    thanks for reading

Hi Dreds25, I am currently using Sling Pro HD with Db 800HD. I am on Myrep Fiber. Everything works fine. I can switch on my DB from outside even in overseas as long as there is an internet connection. However, HD only works on 4G or wifi connection. If you are on 3G, it will be SD. Hope this helps.

      Hi,

      Secured Way:
Step 1. Make sure you have lots of upload bandwidth for your home internet access.
Step 1a. Make sure your "another location" have lots of download bandwidth

Step 2. Make sure your home router supports some form of VPN server. Consult your router documentation.
Step 2b. Set up a VPN server on your home router.

Step 3. Install VPN client software on your laptop / mobile device

Step 4. Connect your laptop / mobile device (at the "another location") to your home LAN, via the VPN client.

Step 5. Open web browser and point it to your DM800's IP address

      Step 6. Enjoy

      Insecured Way:
Step 1. Make sure you have lots of upload bandwidth for your home internet access.
Step 1a. Make sure your "another location" have lots of download bandwidth

Step 2. Set up port forwarding to your DM800. Consult your router's documentation.

Step 3. On your laptop / mobile device (at the "another location") point the web browser to your router's WAN IP address (eg 123.45.67.89:***X, where ***X is the port defined in step 2.)

      Step 4. Enjoy.

Note the inscured way also means that anyone on the internet can access your DM800 and mess with it.

Also, you'll need to setup some form of DynDNS service so you can access your router's WAN IP without having to remember it all the time / when your WAN IP address changes.

      Have fun.

Thanks for the replies noslensq , tuxpower , some great info there ,

To noslensq ... I have looked into a slingbox and it seems the better alternative for me , thanks a lot mate ..

To tuxpower .. Thanks for the reply ., would I need a vpn on my router to access my dreambox from abroad ? If I has a vpn on the device I was using abroad would that not be sufficient ?? Also by accessing my dreambox through the ip of the box , would that not only alow me to view the files that are on it or would I be able to watch the channels ?
        Sorry for the questions ..
        Appreciate the help guys
        Thanks

I would think having a secured VPN to your home router would be an ideal choice especially you are abroad for a period of time. That would mean that if someone knows your home IP Address, they might be taking advantage in watching for free with your expense. For local who wants to watch locally, you can do without the VPN as you would know and make necessary changes to your router or ip address assigned from the ISP.

You might need to check what kind of router you have there, does it provide an easy VPN setup if not if you are needed to be abroad, then a good firewall with VPN modules would do you some good. Cheers

I am right in thinking if I set up my router correctly , would I also need some third party software to watch the channels ?
Sorry for the questions but I just want to totally understand before I take the next step .. Thanks guys I appreciate the help massively

So what did you use to stream over to your mobile. VLC Stream for iPhone!

If abroad and good fibre connection, just browser with VLC Player or Media Player from Windows. I've setup a simple documentation for anyone who wants to view it on remote "Streaming How to for a Dream Box Make Simpler.pdf - Downloads - Digital Kaos" See if it makes sense.

For VPN, you would need to be logon before you go to the browser to view. Cheers

                        I have a question.
If I am watching the stream from a remote location, and locally at home a family member operates the DM to watch it, skipping thru the channels, does it affect what I am viewing remotely?

Of course it will, may even need to reconnect again. Best IMO is still using the Slingbox.

                            Oh? OK.
SlingBox behaves the same way as I read up on their website.

It's the same in a sense, the remote streaming is not a separate entity from the local box.

So changing channels remotely is the same as changing them when I'm in front of my TV?
Yes. You're "sharing" the TV with those at home, so you'll need to cooperate with them over what to watch!

Of course the main box is always the master, any changes to it will affect the remote location. If the main box is turn off, then whichever methods of remote access is useless.

The advantage of the Slingbox or the Vulkano is it's use little bandwidth to stream and it is able to remotely change channels.
