    Channel list problem

Well, I got a dreambox 500c this morning and, thanks to the help on this forum, got it going very quickly using telnet and FTP on a Mac.

One problem though, at the top of the channel list I have 10-12 channels with no name, just numbers. How can I sort the list so that it displays properly?

I've seen mention of doing a "Brute force scan", does that mean a manual scan and if so what settings should I use apart from putting my net id in?

I've FTP'd what I think is the latest cables.xml file into the box.

you just need to put the channels you want in to bouquets in order to your liking with remote

And what about the one's with no name just a number? Most of them are valid channels ie Channel 5.

      How do I rename them?

If you are using an Enigma based image (i.e. DK1.1) I think you've discovered the old scanning bug which will wrongly detect ancillary services as TV channels. It is easy to get rid of them.

        Select one of these channels...
Bring up the all services list.
Wait a few seconds, minute at most.

The software will realise this is not a real channel, or work out what it's real name is, the list will update and the fake channel will be gone / replaced with "(removed service)" which will eventually go away.

Repeat until they are all gone.

Ah, thanks for that, so by the "all services list" you mean the channel list that appears when I press the OK button?

Yes DK 1.1 by the way.

Going back to my OP, is a brute force scan another name for a manual scan or am I missing an option somewhere?

When you press OK what does it say at the top corner of the Window?

Depending on what skin you have, it should say "All services (TV)" if it doesn't press the RED button.

Brute force is a type of Automatic scan. On your box is a file called "cables.xml" contained in this file is a list Automatic scan types. Each type is in turn a list of frequencies to scan for transponders. One transponder or multiplex usually contains several TV channels and other services.

The "Brute Force" automatic scan is really intended for people who do not know their area. It contains frequencies and symbol rates for every type of UK cable network (ex-NTL, ex-Telewest, ex-C&W etc.)

Once you know your area, you can work out your symbol rate and cut down the time it takes to perform an automatic scan by choosing one with one symbol rate.

The "cable.xml" file is a sore point with most users as the ones in images are often out of date and do not contain all the frequencies needed to automatically find all channels.

I personally never use automatic scans, I always use manual network scans.
