Cant change default password

Hi guys

Cant seem to solve this one....got my box today and followed a few guides. ive flashed the dreambox500C ok, managed to get VLC streaming (albeit intermittantly to a networked pc) and also managed to set up some bouquets and nas recording so im pretty happy...thanks
One question...ive been trying to telnet onto the box through putty....thats worked out ok but whenever I try to change the default username and password I get passwd: An error occurred updating the password file.

Ive tried various lengths between 5 and 8 but all seem to fail
Any ideas?

Hi Kiteboy,

Just a guess on my part but you may need to be logged on as root or the permissions on the file may be incorrect, it may need to be chmod'ed to give you the permission to write to the file.

Telnet into your box i.e Start > Run > Telnet 192.168.x.xxx
login as normal and than at command prompt type in passwd and this will than prompt you for your new password.

I have logged on through telnet and done exactly that and that is where I get the error

Ill try and chmod the password file and see wot happens

Well tried this morning and it changed with no problems at all ( i did this yesterday - honestly ) Very odd...thanks all
