you can back it up from his pc..

            Start - Run

In the run command box type..

            telenet (dreambox ip)

            eg

            telnet 192.168.1.100

A command window will appear, enter username / password for the box

            then type..

            cat /dev/mtd/3 > /tmp/backup.img

            including the spaces..

then use his FTP program go to the /tmp file and you sill see the backup.img file.. save this to a disk then pop it on your PC, rename it to whatever you like but keep the .img extention then FTP it over to your box

                does he use Vista..?

By default, Vista installs without telnet available. Here is how to enable telnet in Vista:

                1. Open ‘Control Panel’

                2. Select ‘Programs and Features’

                3. In the left column, select ‘Turn Windows features on or off’ (get ready for the annoying UAC prompt)

                4. Check the box next to telnet (and any other obscure services you may want enabled), and wait while Vista thinks for a while.

sounds like you mate never probably turned telnet on if it wont connect..

if he wants to he should be able to by doing the following..

Right Click on my computer icon then go to manage
                            click on "Computer management".

In right window pane click on services and applications, open services and applications folder then go to services open it.

Then search for telnet service then make this service available
