The answer to your question is yes with the correct image on the dm500c

You will need a subscription to V media.

the answer to your first question about subscription is no you dont need to subscribe but is advisable you do however need a live feed coming into your property in order to get anything from the cable so the best way to keep it live is subscribe to something either broadband or minimum tv. the dreambox is a very good way to get sky sports as skegsagypsy says

yes you can buy one and connect up to live bb feed the dreambox 500 c are all clones now days as they do not make them anymore but dont be fooled in to thinking they are bad, infact they are excellent. you will need a null cable to run on your image and an ethernet cable to put on your magic files, on the other hand the kryptview eurovox and starviews will just need a null cable but is advisable to buy these boxes genuine and should you choose to buiy ask in the forum as to who sells genuine

i dont have a router.i connect with a null modem cable and a crossover cable for transferring files via ftp.
as far as i know its easier if you dont have a router connected as there are more settings you need to alter to connect to PC if you do have one.therefore more settings = more that can go wrong, especially for a noob like me
It can be a pain in the ass though when you are connected staight to PC..plug xover cable in,change ip settings, doesn't work, unplug xover cable, plug in ethernet cable, reset ip settings, back onto internet, unplug ethernet, plug in xover cable..and so on..

To answer questions, as you already paying virgin for BB, you can just split that cabel feed, run one line to your BB and the other to your Dreambox 500c, with DK image on it and the new roms, you will NOT have to pay virgin for any TV service.
                      Setup: 2x Dreambox 800HD | 3x Dm500S on Motorised dish Setup
