If you go for the DK image then read the first post carefully and make sure you download any files that are recomended.
Well it's been a long time coming but it's eventually here - Digital Kaos v1 image for all versions of DM500, cable satellite and terrestrial. Please read this post in full before asking any questions. All questions with answers in this post will be referred here. A few details about the image! Yellow - Kaos Panel

        Dreambox v DBox 2

Thanks Father Ted for your reply. I haven't received the Dreambox yet so I am doing the research first. Do the images you suggest auto update codes? I have flashed a friend's Dreambox with a Digitalworldz image and he is happy with it but still has to manually edit after a roll

the dbox sorted the bedroom for the best part of 3 years, but have recently upgraded to a dm500c (hopefully an dm800 by xmas ) and frm what i have noticed so far is:

if you just want a basic tv box with a couple of games go for a dbox
but if u want a proper little mess around box to learn how these things work - go for the dreambox

if you just want to watch tv the dbox is great but if you want to push to the limits the it has to be the dreambox

Games? Does anyone actually use their Box for playing games?

you can do a lot more than "just watch tv" with the dbox, it has ftp functionality, allowing you to "mess around" with quite a few bits. and the dbox also benefits from the lcd, which is very useful in my opinion.

however, dreamboxs are significantly smaller, newer, faster than dboxes.

I have both and personally use the dbox more often.

Ebro - yes, the game are used on the dbox, they have kept my neice happy for many a hour playing snake

billy_boy786 - i wasnt slatin the dbox, i know it had the lcd screen (which comes in very handy when youve had 1 to many beers and ended up on the floor), but when it comes to trying new things out (or messin about like i said in my last post) i think the gemini image is a touch more easier to sort compared to the neutrino on the dbox

                      that my opinion anyway

the dreambox i an excellent piece of hardware the only real problem is it has limited neutrino support the enigma support is second to none tho!!

Try Neutrino although it does seem to be getting a little left behind in terms of further development/newer images.
Checkout the RED stickies massive amount of info and effort been put into them.

Thanks to all who replied to my question. How much memory is in each of these boxes? Is there enough to retain photos or small videos or mp3s/wav files.
Would it be worth thinking about installing a hard drive? It looks to me that I can't actually "break" anything as I can now re-install back-ups from my pc.
                            or.....
Should I be happy that I've got it receiving the stations and quit while I am ahead?

I think you said you were getting a DM500C, this has limited memory and you would be lucky to get two cams loaded into RAM. You cannot install a hard drive in a DM500C though you could set up network drive.
