Have they got half decent quality cables? What inputs are they using from the set top box?

Feedback noise could be related to the audio cables, scart cable, coax cable, speakers in the TV, etc.

Very hard for us to tell you what's wrong from what you've described.

thanks for your replies i gather you believe the problem lay with the output cables from the box,i was thinking the might have been a conflict between the box and the large flat screen tvs
the guy with the dreambox uses a three foot scart but has a low snr and high ber
while the guy with cc box uses 12ft scart and i do not know the quality of his feed
          thanks again

            Low SNR = weak signal

Connect the box to the main feed and see if the SNR % improves, should be about 96%. If it improves, if he wants to continue to run the box off a splitter, a signal booster will be needed to boost the SNR %.

For problem with VM box, phone VM .

                    hi challah,
ooow, can of worms all over the floor mate, this can be a dooosy

I've been there, and spent about 2.5k fixing the noise that comes with cable,
(but i now have a 7.1 set up to show for it )

first have a wee look at this

it will give you some idea on why it's happening.

Ok, so the only fix i found that worked for me was to split the AV.
what i've done is sent the Video feed from the box to my plasma via a component cable, and sent the audio to my amp using a digital optical cable.
that way there is not a connection between the amp and box so the current can't flow between your equipment and cause that ~~~~en buzz...

so there it is, 9 months of flafing around and 2 amps later in a few lines...

                    hope this helps them...
