    Is my port activated?

    Hello,

Realy sorry about such a basic question.

I am a long time avid satellite user. I have just moved into a new house which has a cable tv port in it.

Just wondering is this port active for me to go and buy a dm500c?

Or must i get some sort of activation done on it beforehand? eg is the port live?

many thanks and apologies but i am a novice cable user.

    thanks

what area are you living? is the cable connected to a "wall box"? do you know which providers are in your area?

Chances are the port is live m8.. Its very rare that they get disconnected at the box in the street. To be sure just sub to the min package, or if you are intending having bb from vm then you'll be sorted.

If you have a tv with freeview built in, you can plug the cable into the tv and scan for channels, if its live you should be able to pick up the standard 5 free channels(bbc,itv,ch5).
You will have to get the cable adaptor first.(so it fits into the tv ariel socket)

But dont forget, if its not officially activated, it may get turned off at any time.

Basically i have a virgin broadband port which is not on the internet but its obviously active as i can load up the virgin activation page.

The virgin broadband port is in one room and i can get on the virgin activation page using it. But the internet is not activated yet.

In a seperate room there is a wall box with 2 plugs saying FM and TV.

Reckon a 500c would do the job then?

          many thanks for quick replies.

ps are they just standard satellite coax cables for it? or are they dif?

Surely that is not true? You cannot use a freeview (DVB-T) receiver to get cable (DVB-C), even free-to-air.

You used to be able to use an ordinary TV to get the unscrambled analog TV channels, but Virgin stopped transmitting Analog TV in November 2008, there is no way to pick up images without a DVB-C capable device.

Pretty much sure that Freeview tuners are incompatible with cable.

ok ive just recieved my box.
I can view fta stuff like bbc through it so the port must be live.

                    I have installed dk 1.1

and placed the downloads on this thread

                    Keys into /var/keys

                    roms into /var/scce

chmod 775 to all files and folders

                    But cant decrypt anything.

                    Any ideas? Many thanks
I dont have access to a router so i used a crossover cable to ftp.

Do i need internet access to update the keys?

                    thx
