    500C.... end of the line?

    Hey guys.
I am about to get a dreambox 500C...
but my friend says he's heard Vir**n media tv software is to be updated and so this box wont recieve any channels and I will then need to get another box with updated software (...i think its Negra2 or 3 or somethinh like that...) that can recieve the feed. now he's no expert on cable and says it was something he just heard.

I took it what he said with a pinch of salt but to be on the safe side, can anyone tell me if theres any truth to this.
Surely, even if the software is upgraded, as the 500C is running linux then a new fix can be developed.... right?

and how long is the 500C likely to be around, if I get it now can I expect it to still work and recieve cable tv in a couple of years????.............. (assuming the hardware still works and new fix's will still be developed)

i have been messing with these things for a few years and have been hearing rumours ever since but nothing is set down in stone yet mate. something is sure to happen out there so what sort of timelife these boxes have we dont know, i always look at it like this (if i get 3 months from a box thats cost 100 quid im in profit). if you were to buy a dreambox it would in my opinion have a better chance of being used in the future than some of the plug and play boxes as it could possible be used to cs

        He's partially right.

the big switch over is coming, sooner rather than later. At that point, all the current boxes will be useless more than likely. As for a fix, how long is a piece of string? People won't know if a hack is possible until whatever their intended upgrade (nag3, NDS, IPTV, etc) is rolled out, so to speak. and people don't even know which path they'll go down yet - it's all just rumours.

if u look at sky, on NDS ( i think..) that hasn't been hacked and is near impossible to make a workable system anything like whats around for cable at the moment.

at that point, i'll probably jump to a HD box - it'll be the push i need! sly or freesat. i'm not a 'sports' person so losing those channels don't bother me.

but, i'll know where to come to flog my 500c

i would imagine you will get at least 6 month from now m8 minimum so it would pay for itself if it did all go wrong

Options please if the virgin 'switch-over' makes my 500c a brick

                            Hello Guys (the experts)

One of my friends who is in the know, has also confirmed that virgin media will be switching over to the new system, thus rendering my 500c (which has the appropriate firmware installed by someone else) to become nothing more than a freeview box.

The virgin change is to a new encryption system (not keys) which obviosly cannot be cracked yet.

So, options please, for me to enjoy the benefits that I have been getting.

My friend states that I should

                            1) Purchase a (satellite-based) 500S, install appropriate firmware, and point it to a particular satelllite. Won't get SKY encrypted channels directly he says, but this particular satellite with the appropriat firmware will allow me to see almost the same (encrypted) channels as sky.

Any other solutions, or boxes which will allow me to do this via satellte.

Obviously, I am interested in HD feeds but that may be expensive.

I am turning to this site, as it pointed me in the right direction to get my 500C reflashed again, in the past.

                            I'm counting on you guys.

                            Thanks
