There is freesat out now i think but im fairly sure it uses a dish like sly.they do hd channels and no monthly charges.You can get the boxes from argos etc.or get the new dreambox dm800,bit costly though

Yes there is but to be honest i wouldnt bother. There isnt much content and cable doesnt use mpeg4 compression. Dreambox DM800 I believe there are other boxes from Germany. You'll pay about ?380 for a DM800.

Ive not seen any images around.

Also true there is only 1 channel anyway.

I'm thinking of getting freesat myslef. It does require dish, and also non standard dvbs2 epg(think it uses the same as freeview, maybe work on combo box??)

Of course there are a couple of specialised boxes coming out now.

what no sly sports hd 1 and 2? ~~~~ that then i aint getting one, was the only reason i even considered a hd cable box.

i,ll stick with my sat set up instead.

How come NationalGeoHD and DiscoveryHD are Sky only too? Cable carry the SD versions but not the HD. Is it an issue of cost or has Sky got exclusivity on all the coolest channels?

any further updates on this lads?
And why is it that only 1 channel can be decoded? Am i being dumb or is it all down to the way the channels are transmitted? i.e. why can we pick up sly sports / movies etc on SD on a 500C and not the HD equivalent channels (having the right hw of course - DM800).

I just cant fit another box in at the moment as I have Sky+ in bedroom and the DB in the lounge otherwise I would buy a freesat HD box.

the channels just are not available on cable yet,, simple as that,,
next year they have some more planned, but at present only bbchd on dvb-c uk.
