Begging for help.

Good day all,
I will freely admit to being a total novice on cable----having always played with satellite.
I have basic cable at home from NTL [home being Southend in Essex]
I have purchased a new 500c,null modem cable and thats it.
I am now hoping that one of you kind members can help an old man out by providing a step by step guide in easy to understand language to enable me to set up this nice little toy.
I already own a 500s but this was set up by a good friend so really I'm the proverbial newbie begging for knowledge.

m8 read the first sticky in this cable section
download the dreamup software in that thread
you need to download an image file which is called digital kaos
this file is sent to the dreambox ,
which is here Digital Kaos - Downloads - Digital Kaos v1 Image for DM500 (cable and sat)
setup the dreamup program then follow the first sticky

Everyone has to start somewhere. The folks here are very helpful. The guides are pretty good if you follow them through step by step.
If you have trouble with the guides or don't quite understand something then ask.

With your gracious help I have managed to carry out the full procedure of the first sticky, so now I presume that I have to carry out a scan [is there anything else I should do such as find an area code for Virgin/NTL or whatever]
I'll never be a genius at this but with your assistance at least I won't remain a newbie LOL.

Do an automatic transponder scan and select either 6887 or 6952.

All virgin media regions were either telelwest, ntl or exc&w before virgin took over.

telewest - 6952
ntl - 6887
exc&w - 6952

If you know what region you used to be, choose the appropriate option.

If not, choose the bruteforce option, this is longer but will yield the same results.

Well I've followed the guide and had to scan twice but all now up and running--you guys are the best---thank you most sincerely. I have now shown it running to a friend and he's ordering a box right now so once again friends, thank you.
Just one final part to the jig saw my box is obviously not an original or is it----how do you check?

bascily if u bought your dm500 in the last 18 months or so its 99.9999999999999% a clone
unless the seller confirmed it as orig and provided u with orig till receipts
dream multimedia stopped production almost two years ago

Hi chaps-----thanx for all so far. Now that I have all the free channels showing clear [excellent pics on this 500c] where do I proceed to next so as to get all. In basic english please, as I've noticed that you youngsters tend to have more brainpower than us oldies. .

hello all I hope you can guide me in the right road, i'll soon have my dreambox 500c and null modem cable and have installed a serial pci card ready to go. I understand the sticky on how to use dreamup to flash dkv1 but I am a bit cloudy on a few things

1, will dkv1 provide the means to unlock all stations or does it not do this at all?
2, would it be better to flash the dream world image Ive got saved? I understand that when needed this version will update via the internet when box is connected and provide the new keys etc....

connect your dreambox to your router with ethernet cable
have you got a ftp programe if not in the downloads is somethingcalled dcc
set that up with ip addy on your box in menu>setup>expert settings
if your pc ip addy is something like 192.168.1.100 set the dreamboxto 192.168.1.101
and the gateway your router ip addy
to start with
