DM600 Installing HDD, Formatting etc.

How long should the formatting of a 40gb drive take? I've managed to get the box all setup and working fine and dandy, now its onto the PVR side of things and I can't get anywhere.

I've plugged it in and went to format it. It says on the screen that it is formatting and that it could take some minutes (not exactly helpful). Its been going now for 30 mins and i've not had any other information from it. Will it tell me if there are any failures? What file system does the 600 use?

I'm thinking the drive might be done.

Anyone had any experience?

Depending on what image you are using but on the Pli image there is an option to make the hdd go to sleep after so many minutes when idle. I have my hdd go to sleep after 2 mins but this is not long enough to format the disk so changed this to something longer and it worked fine.

Out of curiosity, do you know approx how long it took? I kind of expected 15-20 mins, it going into hours would suggest to me it's not working?

I'm getting the feeling there aren't many DM600 users. Its very difficult to find any information regarding them and the bits and pieces that I am finding i'm having to put together by myself.

Thanks very much for your help Curious, I really do appreciate it. I managed to get a fix for my issue and the timer wasn't it. Least I will know how to set up these boxes in future, won't bother with the forums from now on. Noone else seems to bother, why should I.

a 40 gig HDD will be old and quite possible in a shite state so is probably failing... I cannot remember how long it take but i formatted a 240Gb in mine in less than 30 mins if i remember correctly but that was two years ago

I would say that 90% of the information that applies to a dm500 applies to most of the other boxes but you can only get to grips with a dreambox through tons of reading. I wasted weeks with my dm600 before I found one of the digital forums and thanks to that forum I managed to get my box working and more so if wasn't for these people my box would have been a very expensive doorstop.
