    Fast Scanning on Dreambox?

    Howdy,

I've been thinking of getting a dreambox as an upgrade to my very old dbox but just wondering what the channel scanning is like. I heard a while back that it wasn't very fast and didn't pick up all channels (... adult was the example used!)

Has this been improved on with the latest images?

    Cheers.

agree its not as fast as a dbox2 for scanning but, go and have a cup of tea and a sandwich and it will be done.

it only takes about 15 mins on a dm500 at the most

It depends on how you scan.

I always do a manual scan using my default frequency, selecting 'Inv', 'use ONIT', 'use BAT' and 'network search'.

The default frequency will take you straight to the NIT table in the stream which contains the transponder ids that only contain channels. There are transponders with no channels so there's no point in scanning them. It only takes about 6 minutes this way.

I've attached the ex-tw NIT list, the frequency that has the 'flash service' is the default frequency, use this frequency when doing a manual scan. For me in Scotland it's 619MHz (see osdshot).

If you want to adjust your automatic transponder scan settings, i.e. cables.xml file, to do a scan on the default frequency using the other options, here is some more info.

Open the cables.xml file with Wordpad. Look for a line like this...

      Code:
      <cable name="6952" flags="9">
The 'flags="9"' but is important, here is how it's made up.

      UseONIT scanflags = 4
      UseBAT scanflags = 2
      NetworkSearch scanflags =1

Use a combination of the above numbers to search using that criteria, i.e. if you want to only search with 'useONIT' then it would read 'flags="4". If you want to scan using all the above options it would read 'flags="7". I know the current cables.xml file says 'flags="9" but I don't know why it's like that, it's always been like that. Maybe if it was set to 7 it would be faster, maybe that's a wee task for someone to see if it is quicker and if it does get all the channels.

If you look at the cables.xml file, you'll see that some of the Irish settings, i.e. MMDS, is set to scan on flags="7" and it only has 2 frequencies, those are probably default frequencies. If you have the default frequency you don't need to know any other frequencies because it will get them from the NIT table in the stream.

      I hope that's easy to read .

          Sounds promising...

So basically its a manual setup for every region to make the scan quicker? Don't suppose anyone has looked into a 'Set My Location' (similar to the dbox) or does that not sound possible?
