Dreambox DM 500-C - Newb help

Hi,

My friend recently gave me the dreambox dm 500-c. I have a virgin media set-top box but with just the free channels package. I unplugged it and put in the dreambox instead.

I tried to scan for channels. My options were, which I didn't understand what each meant:
Cable-UK Sym6952
Cable-UK Sym6887
Bruteforce

I did a scan on the bruteforce selection, but I am only getting a few channels like bbc, itv...etc. The other channels always say "could not be descrambled".

I am not that technically minded, so was wondering if someone could tell me simple steps on how to unlock the premium channels please. I tried looking on the forum but couldn't undertstand anything thoroughly and didn't want to mess anything up.

Would ge grateful for any help.

I am totally new to this, so I dont know what an image is.... Is there a way to check or something? I haven't uploaded anything to it anyway....

an image is the the firmware which is what makes the work
the menus scaning features every you see using the remote control

to see what image youve got press menu>information>about
it should tell you

if the box is setup ok
press the blue button
it should tell you about an emu either evocamd or mgcamd
you need to restart one of them, put it on a premium channel for a couple of minutes then switch to another and see if it comes on
if not you might need to use an ftp client to add some files

I went to menu>information>about and it says Software Version:unknown. When I press the blue button, there is no option for evocamd or mgcamd.

Does that mean I need use an ftp client? I dont know what that means so can someone tell me a step by step on how to do it.

I also have a modem and wireless router connected, if that helps with anything...

Connecting to the Dreambox

To connect to the dreambox we are going to use an FTP Client. There are many programs available for this, FlashFXP, CuteFTP, Filezilla and SmartFTP are some examples. For this guide we are going to use FlashFXP.

Once you?ve downloaded it, run the flashfxp.exe file and the program will load.

In the left window is where the dreambox file system will appear after we connect. In the right window is your PC file system. Treat both windows like any other windows explorer window. To transfer files between the dreambx and PC, cimply drag the file from one window to the other and wait for it to transfer. The bottom left window shows a history of the files transferred and the progress of current files during transfer.

Near the top, on the toolbar, you should see an icon with a lightening strike on it, click it and choose ?Quick connect? (you can also press F8 on your keyboard). Configure the options to look like this?

Server or URL: 192.168.1.101

Username: root

Password: dreambox

Port: 21

You will need relevant software so that your box can be flashed by ftp.

Dream up, Flash Wizard. Dreambox Control Center. Extract the file and autorun the program. A small box will appear with the relevant software.

Connect to your dreambox via DCC. You will need your Dreamboxes ip address for this. If you do not have it and have an image already on you box. Go into the setup, expert, communications. Your ip address will be in here.


Once you have connected to the dreambox. Open Flashwizard. Go into configuration and ultilies at the bottom of the box. Make sure the ip of the dreambox is the same as the one in dcc. It should be. If not change it.

Now Click Install a Firmware to flash memory. Now you will need the image. Click the open folder tab. Browse for the image. Should be on your desktop. Click open.

Flash the image.

The image should now be visible in the box.

Thanks alot. I will try this when I am free in the evening. One thing I didn't understand is how do you actually connect the dreambox to the pc? Like what options do I have?

Connect it to your wireless router and ftp to it from your pc.

Sorry for being tedious. But I need it in more simple terms...

So i connect it to my wireless router, using an ethernet cable I assume? into one of the free ports right?

And what do You mean by ftp it to my pc? As I dont know what ftp is exactly or how to do it...

In my post earlier follow the instructions.

FTP is just a way of connecting to your box to your pc and communicating via your router although this can be done without one. Then transferring files etc over to your box.

Simply plug an ethernet cable from your router to the dreambox and follow the instructions i provided.

ok, I tried using the flashFXP.

I went to quick connect. Put in the ip address of my dreambox; put in root and dreambox as username and password. Then went to connect.

It then says connected, but with no files showing up, then says connection failed (connection timed out).

Can someone please tell me how to get around this?

edit: Just figured it out. On the dreambox where it shows you your IP address, it says it is using port 80, so that what I was typing into FlashFXP. I tried with the defualt port 21 and it worked.

Ok, now when I transfer the image using flashFXP to the dreambox it says "1file failed to transfer" at the bottom.

I ignored this and then rebooted and did a quick scan of channels, but then got:

Fatal Error

Couldn't open servicefile - create

/var/tuxbox/config/enigma


Could someone tell me where I have gone wrong please?

1st you need to flash the digital kaos image onto your dreambox. you need a null modem cable and dreamup software (from d/load section)
guide is in there as well total noobs guide that shoul;d get you up and running.
