your mate will have been connected to the cable company in one way or another. if you live in a area where there isn't much demand for cable you'll usually find they don't disconnect older feeds, only when there connection box starts nearing full capacity they'll disconnect any old feeds, that's what you need to look out for...

as for the broadband, both cable TV and cable broadband get sent over the same coaxial cable, so if you split the feed for your broadband you'll also get all the channels if you use a DM or something similar.

as said before it's best to get either the basic package or broadband so you're giving just a little back for something that would cost you a hell of allot...
and you'll defo not risk the chance of getting disconnected.

i can't see how you would get out of there contract if you did what you said you were gonna do, also the might charge you alot more for the install...

    Hope this helps

Every now and then they will audit the green boxes against their billing records and that's when there's a chance they'll pull the plug on your feed.
by keeping the minimum basic package you protect yourself against this happening.

Pull a stunt like that within the cancellation period and its highly likely they will disconnect you.
They are wise to these scams nowadays,as for your mate no doubt there has been a sub at the address for sometime which now maybe cancelled,as such they aint disconnected or audited it yet.
Checkout the RED stickies massive amount of info and effort been put into them.

When you sign up with Virgin you signed into a contract and its law that you follow that contract, might be 6 or 12 months.

It would look highly suspicious if you canceled immediately .

do as most people say and pay monthly for a feed to your house, whether it be for broadband or TV package.

Then think about your dreambox connection using a splitter .

The reason your mates cable still works is that the engineers havn't physically been up and unplugged the cable for his house from the green box (usually at the end of the street.) This could still happen at any time and thats why most people have a basic package of some description. Sorry this has already been covered by other posts (I only saw the 1st page)

hi it depends on if you get any signal from the source in your locality. i had the same last year then i lost my signal may have been reparable but virgin and ntl are the same just different name. When someone moves in or connects to virgin in your locality if someone is not connected the engineer will redirect that signal too new customer because it has a maximum output from source. Therefore better pay for cheapest package as advised to prevent complete loss of signal. Also they do visit sometimes to prevent fraud.

also check terms and condition as if cancel in 30 days you may be liable for installation costs

It's not in Virgin media's interest to physically unhook your house from their network, because, it means man hours wastage, and then the same again if you decide to take up their services in future. They like to mail shot you regularly to get you aboard with their products and services, tempting you with juicy offers. It is obvious they can' do this if you are unhooked, so don't worry mate. The only thing I would say is, invest in a Bye bye Standyby remote power off kit, so that during the day you can power off everything, including your dreambox, in case while you are at work, virgin line test your house for appliances that 'ought not to be hooked up'
