your mate will have been connected to the cable company in one way or another. if you live in a area where there isn't much demand for cable you'll usually find they don't disconnect older feeds, only when there connection box starts nearing full capacity they'll disconnect any old feeds, that's what you need to look out for...
as for the broadband, both cable TV and cable broadband get sent over the same coaxial cable, so if you split the feed for your broadband you'll also get all the channels if you use a DM or something similar.
as said before it's best to get either the basic package or broadband so you're giving just a little back for something that would cost you a hell of allot...
and you'll defo not risk the chance of getting disconnected.
i can't see how you would get out of there contract if you did what you said you were gonna do, also the might charge you alot more for the install...
