could be many things , but here are a few.

maybe the signal strength is weakened by more people in your street getting cable.

    maybe the connection is loose.

try standing the 500 on its side so the vents are free from heat , as ive found out standing a 500 on top of another box, i.e dvd player will be taking in too much heat. And can distort the picture .

could be that Virmin are doing some work in your area, so wait a few days if thats the case.

there is many more, but try to eliminate each one until you find the problem.

It's kinda hard to understand what 'checkering' means. Maybe a picture would help us understand.

i think it maybe a problem with your scart to the tv try taking all the connections out and puting them back in, it would be better if you had a picture so we understand exactly what you mean just like devilfish said.

It means the signal is distorrted now and again.

          its a signal problem.

If this is happening on all channels then a signal booster is the fix.

If only on a few channels you might find the signal is too strong and you need an attenuator.

when you say checkering , i assumed blocky pixels on screen. ( squares ) and all over the place. ?

Thanks for your speedy replies.....yea that's what I meant blocky pixels, it's happening on all the channels but its worse on some of them. I'll try out a few of the fixes mentioned and see how that helps, many thanks again....

check your cable connections and make sure they are tight. i had a dog that went round the back of the tv and pulled the cable loose.
