DM500 Got myself a wrt350n and flashed dd-wrt mega build!

Well guys I decided to upgrade my router so I sold my wrt54gsv4 router and have now opted for a wrt350n...... which I picked up for ?60 including postage from some guy in canada from ebay (power adapter works fine here).

For those that don't know it's a wireless n (next gen) router, with gigabit switch and has built in usb support. It's now been flashed with dd-wrt v24 sp1 mega firmware which allows me to install optware & download ipkg packages.

Right that probably doesn't mean much to some on here but bear with me....

By installing some packages and attaching a usb drive - The router can be used as a ftp server, multimedia server, run websites & a samba share can be set up to use the dreambox 500 as a pvr as well as acting as a router and gigabit switch....not bad for ?60 I hear you say.

So I just have a quick question - has anyone else here done this so I can get some pointers and what ipkg packages have you installed?

I just got the router today - so I haven't played around with it apart from testing the usb to run a ftp site and http server, also I flashed dd-wrt on and enabled usb. I still need to install optware and packages though.

Any help would be appreciated and save me a bit time - or else I'm gonna be doing a bit of reading.

If anyones interested once I have everything up and running I can make a small tutorial, if not I won't bother.

The modem has a usb port, primarily on the original software it's for installing a usb hard/pen drive so you can share media files and use as a ftp server. However as the router has been flashed with a linux OS it can be used for so much more.

I would imagine if you can get linux drivers for your 3g dongle you could mount the dongle to work somehow - but I am not sure about it working properly as the modems WAN port would need to be reconfigured to work from USB instead and I have no idea how to do that.

Basically the usb port is designed for attatching usb printers, hard drives, dvd/cd drives and pen drives so you can burn cd's/dvd's via a network or have a networked shared printer or just a share point or media server.

Obviously with ipkg packages you can install php,apache,sql,http,ftp etc so you could run your own site from the usb as well so there would be no need to have a computer on to host a website and you wouldn't need to pay server fees - the downside is obvioulsy your upload speed if using on the net - not so much on a lan though. You could even use it do download torrents which would save you having your pc on as well.

The other thing is because of the storage (hard drive plugged in) you can make the dreambox use this as a samba share and record programs from your dreambox500 onto it and stream from it to the dreambox500. That works out much cheaper than buying a NAS....and does things a NAS does not.

DD-WRT

Would be interested to know as well.

Got DD-WRT on my Buffalo router but the only extra bits I use are for VPN. Would consider an upgrade for all those extras.

I have to say, DD-WRT absolutely rocks and the router is much more stable (especially for bittorrent) since I replaced the manufacturers firmware with it!

Their wiki is pretty good too, but there are some differences between versions so it sometimes takes a while to catch up.

Well I managed to install optware and some ipkg packages last night and to get a http site working that supports php.....

Here's how - Firstly I flashed the wrt350n with dd-wrt v24sp1 mega build as that comes with the usb installed in the firmware by default, I then enabled the usb in the routers settings pages.

After that a used a 1GB usb pen drive and partitioned it into three parts, each part was formatted as ext2,swap and ext3 (linux systems). And plugged it into the router.

Then I telnetted into the router and did this:

cd /tmp
wget http://mrdude.110mb.com/linux/install.sh
sh install.sh

This installs optware so ipgk packages can be installed. (I made an install script to make it easier).

Then to install a http server I did this in telnet:

/opt/bin/ipkg-opt install thttpd

I then Edited the thttpd.conf with vi editor to change the name - nobody to root and saved thttpd.conf

Then I copied index.html to /opt/share/www

I then started the http server with this command:

/opt/etc/init.d/S80thttpd start

Alas all was working and my test page was found here:

http://192.168.1.1:8080/index.html

Next weekend when I get more time i'll try adding some more packages, a samba share and writing a script to start them all automatically.

modem not working

what do i need to get my modem working again this is the first time that it has gone on since i had it flashed , and i havent got a clue what i have to do to get it to work again any advice would be really much appreciated if you could give step by step instructions how i can get it back online thankyou.
