    DM500 recording on DM500

    Hi,
I'm having some issues recording from my DM500. I've read as many of the stickies as I can but still have a few questions.

    Here is my Setup:
    DM500 using DW 2.0.
Laptop is sucessfully connected directly to DM500 ((100mb) using network crossover cable - no router.
Laptop Shared folder is sucessfully mounted on DM500.

    Here is my problem:
I can record using the remote ("Radio" Button to start, "TV" to stop etc...) and it seems to work fine but when I playback either on the Dm500 or even using VLC on the laptop the images are pixelated every couple of seconds.
Some times, on different recorded programs, the pixelation is is only every few minutes - on other programes its so bad it unwatchable.

I'm just wondering if anyone has any suggestions for me ?
Are there any specific settings I should be using ? What are the best values for the rsize and wsize settings ? - what do these mean ? are there other settings I could try ?

Also, Could someone explain the difference between the way I am recording above and and if I were to record using Ngrab installed on the PC - whats the difference and whats the advantage/disadvantage.

Also, has anyone spotted what appears to be a bug in the Web-x-tv interface in the <Config>, <mounts> section where it appears to get the mounted drives all mixed up and shows several settings for drives that are not mounted ? is there any fix to this.
    thanks

      Thanks for your reply scuba,

Were you using Ngrab or something else to record ?

Another question ... when using the timer in the multi-epg page - you have the option to "Switch", "DVDR" or "NGRAB". I know what "Switch2 will do but could someone explain what the difference between the other two is ?

      thanks

If direct recording isnt working well for you give ngrab a try and see if thats any better.

"DVR" is direct recording to a mounted folder (like you've been doing)
or if using the dm600 then it records to the internal hard drive if one is installed.

"ngrab" records using the ngrab software that as to be installed on your pc

When i used to record using the dm500 i found ngrab used to give better results for me, but i didnt record very often so not a thorough test.

            thanks for the explaination lorrebreaker,

I've a better idea now of the difference - I'm trying to understand though how Ngrab could be better ... Ngrab will take up more resources on the laptop so wouldn't it slow down the saving of the stream? I kinda thought direct recording would be less complicated for the PC/db and therefore be able to accomoidate the stream better ?

            Any thoughts on this ?
Any suggestions on the rsise and wsize of the mount ?

I'll try the ngrab option anyway ..
            thanks

Scuba - thanks for getting back to me ..

I'd like to stick to recording the way I am rather than switching to Ngrab so I might try the dk image as you suggest.
Do you do much recording ?
How big ( long) would your recorded programes be ?
Can I ask what rsize and wsize settings you have on the mount ?
Has the dk image had any drawbacks apart from the advantage of good recording ?

              thanks

Not saying its better, just that it seemed to get better results for me. My preferred option was direct recording ......... but for whatever reason i always seemed to have problems with it. Thats why i eventually went for the 600.

i`ve recorded good few movies from s*y premier.usualy would set it to record over night...about 8 hours.
                  rsize=8192,wsize=8192
as for the dk image didn`t notice any probs with it, works like a charm also will get a looot of useful stuff for ur box if u connect it to the internet such as cams,addons...all directly downloaded to ur box.

                    thanks again scuba,

I tried recording overnight - last night (without changing anything) and for some reason I got better pictures .. still some pixelation but not as much - I've no idea why this recording was better.

I may still change to the DK image ... as you suggested ... just to see the difference.

                    thanks for you input

sorry for going off topic, but where exactly did you get the DW image? I maybe missing something but I can seem to find it online.
