You need pretty fast internet upload to stream over the internet in this fashion. Generally individual TV programs run at anywhere between 1Mbit/sec to 3Mbit/sec so for streaming in all situations you would really require around 5Mbit/sec of upload speed. You only get that with VM's 50 or 100Mbit/sec products.

You could probably get away with most programs on the 30Mbit/sec tier (3Mbit/sec upload) but you might notice errors or glitching on certain channels with fast action. Lower than 30Mbit/sec (3Mbit/sec upload) and problems will get progressively worse.

If you stream to a local PC and compress before streaming to the internet then you could bring the required bandwidth down significantly (typically 500k/sec - 750k/sec for good video/audio). Unfortunately, near-real-time compression is pretty resource hungry so you'd need a pretty fast machine or alternatively, dedicated hardware.

Streaming over the internet with Dreambox

      Hello.

I know that there have been several posts earlier, years before, but as we now write 2012, and different firmwares/etc have changed, what exactly is needed:

      i.e.:

1.) Which Enigma 1 / 2 firmware / software is needed for best streaming capability ?
2.) Which ports EXACTLY must be open on the router (TO-BOX FROM-BOX in the Routers NAT (Network Address Translation) Table ?
3.) Which programs is best suited for the streaming (VLC /WMP) and HOW EXACTLY to set them up for proper streaming?
4.) If extra compression can be made to the bitstream - can the dreambox do it, or would it be preferable to have another computer on the LAN of the Dreambox do it (i.e. send from dreambox to a PC which then compresses it, and THEN sends the stream to the router / over the internet to the recipient computer)

The sad fact is, that many sports events are restricted as a per country table, so even IF you are the legal recipient of a stream - having paid for it in the recipient country, you are not allowed to directly stream it via their site on the internet, if you are in a country that is different from the origin country.

Often one have to jump through hoops like extra proxies, etc, so streaming via one's own dreambox is preferable in this case (even if one would have to upgrade the upload speed for the vacation period).

      Thank you for your consideration.

      /regards

VPN's can pretty much solve that problem by making it appear you are in the 'correct' country. It takes me 30 secs to move between having US/UK/EU IP addresses. Its usually a much better solution than trying to stream yourself as it avoids the necessity of transcoding (the process of re-coding a stream to save bandwidth) which usually requires significant processor power.
