Bit of an explanation please

OK first off I'm fairly new to all this, but with the help of a few people on here managed to get things sorted OK, and can manually edit the keys to keep things working.

Can someone explain why the auto-update is not working, and what the various bits of software (Image, keys, roms etc) on my box do?
