is there software that you can edit a image before flashing the dbox2

No theres no software to do that. You can take stuff off an image like the keys or services etc but you cannot write to it.

what about just open the flie of the image

Newtuxflash tool will let you open the image but it wont let you write to it, suppose it depends what you actually want to do in the image, you could dual boot Ubuntu or similar Linux OS.
