SNAP! Hello neighbour! But I'm not putting the card in the subbed box yet. Gonna wait until FTA only on the dboxes, then ring 'em up and complain that most of my subbed channels have vanished. Get another card sent out (probably engineer delivered and signed for) and use that one.

This leaves me with the old white card, from which the bk / ird can be read, and a spare rom180 card to donate to a guru who wants to try and analyse it for the greater good of mankind

            Cheers- AL

Yep, but my white ntl card and your later VM red one are both rom11, m8. I used to live up that neck of the woods, too- near the King Harry!

can't u unlock & read the rom 11 card ur taking out? as they can't have killed it before it's swopped.....or does this switch involve changing the bk of the box as well?

from what i've read the bk plays a lesser part in N3 encryption and its the private RSA key that is on the card plays the major part, which is different on each card.

                  The Coder

The boxkey plays a much lesser part in the process and is partly replaced by a new rsa key. The card has the private & public key whilst the box only has the public key.

During initial startup the box will issue a pairing request to the card (cmd2A) which responds with a random number encrypted using the rsa private key. The box then decrypts this (using the public key) and slightly modifies it using an algorithm which may involve the old boxkey. It the re-encrypts using the public key and sends back to the card using a pairing response (Cmd2B). The card can then use its private key to decrypt the response. It then uses this response to derive the pairing session key seed. This session key is then used to encrypt each and every ECM response (much like the old boxkey was used in the N1 cards). A little quirk is that the session key is modified (using yet another algorithm and part of the ECM data) after every single usage meaning the key is NOT constant. The full pairing process is also re-instigated after a period of time not exceeding eight hours !

The idea of donating you spare rom180 card sound a bit worying Al.

Won't there be any info stored on the card that would link it back to your Box & account m8?

Probably- the box s/n for starters. But I won't be anticipating that the guru who tries to analyse it (and probably wreck it in the process) will grass me up, LOL!
