DBox2 Flashing Experience- Hopefully helpful to others

Before I begin:

I live in Warwickshire, have a DBOX2 Nokia (i think i know this as it said so on the display, nothing on the physical box shows this). As it was a Nokia I assumed it was of x2 image (read on the net that Nokia is x2 and sagem can be x1 or x2).

2 weeks ago our channels started to disapear...N3 had hit i thought. Waited a week, and thought to rescan. It scanned and everything was back. Few days ago we lost all except Free to Air channels so I took the plunge.

I have seen the youtube videos after i managed to flash my dbox. They may or may not have been helpful as I followed sooooo many guides. In the end it was a piece of pi$$.

I did the following (some good and some bad):

• Downloaded Image Flashing Assistant (IFA) from this site. - Good
• Downloaded Commando 12 (x12) image from this site - Bad (in my experience)
• Downloaded Filezilla (google) - always useful to have

I didnt have a cross over cable so i used an normal ethernet cable from my PC to my dbox with an adapter which i bought of from a pc shop down the road. Piece of plastice which I was told would behave as a crossover. It did, kind of....
I followed the guide (beginners guide also here on the site) to connect the pc to the dbox. This involved changing the ethernet connection setting on my pc to match those of the dbox2. I change the IP address to 192.168.1.111 on the dbox. I changed the IP address (No DNS) to 192.168.1.110 on the pc for the ethernet connection. Plus the gateway, etc following the guide.

Then I used filezilla to connect to the dbox2. This worked, using user name as root and password as commando (I had a very old commando image already).

I could see my dbox2 files! Happy as Larry.

Then I ran IFA (see above). It has options for Image, Network card and Null modem connected. I selected my image and them my ethernet card adapter (obvious by the name) and everything possible for null modem connection.

Further reading showed me that the null modem connection was not important. I pressed start..Your PC will now be prepared for the Flashing process, plus some other messages regarding the null modem, and about switching the power on the DBOX2...then......nothing....then nothing......

This obviously did my head in. Eventually I did the following (quick recount due to time but i will update this if anyone finds it helpful).

I set the dbox2 network settings to that of my home network, i.e. my routers range and gateway, etc.

I then connected my dbox2 to my router via thernet. Took out the internet connection to the router.

I switched ther dbox off at the mains.

Went to my laptop. Note my laptop was on wireless connection to my wireless router. I ran IFA, selecting the image, my wireless card as the network connection adn NO for the null modem.

I then switched the mains on my dbox2 on.

My lapton then showed IFA working!!!!!!!!!!

It was uploading the image. I pressed the technical details tabe and saw what it was doing.

The technical details tab staring saying NOT SUCCESSFUL. I was again disapointed.

I went out and had a fag (ciggertte!)

Came back and then went and got the dbox2 and took it off the router and plugged it in to the tv again, connected the ariel, etc. Swicthed it on and lo and behold I had the new image.

I scanned as following further guides. No channels found each time.

I re-did the process with commando 11.3 from this site.

Then followed the instructions again, and.....it found channels! FTA only..though, but it worked!

I hope this is helpful to someone before I redo the post and put more detail in (screen shots, excerpts from the guide, button presses, etc).
The reason I wrote this is cos it took me so f***ing long to work out it was actually very easy.

When you connected to your dbox through filezilla you should have just transferred the image to the tmp folder then saved it with the remote. This way would have saved you a lot of time and headache. Most peeps only use IFA when the box as been flashed with the wrong type image which puts into klein mode.

You're right, but every guide i read suggested this as a last resort. Plus it was nicer connected to the router as it made me realise it was easier to transfer to and from the dbox. Also, it kinda made me think about just leaving it with the router and streaming to my laptop and media center. I learned alot from the route i took, admittedly wasnt the fastest, but I thought maybe people would aprreicate the pitfalls I fell into and learn from it. especially the part about the dbox not being dead when the channels disapeared. Just a new update was required, therefore not a doorstop as I read alot of people have been considering as. I realise N3 is on its way, but maybe people have given up before needed.

and flash without bootloader.

2 use hallenberg dbox flashing asistend or bootmanger works only with r232 cabel

dbox2 will only flash wen its in debug modes you cane se this on the display wen the dbox startup.all greazy text on the display in the furst 10 sec wen the box get power.

Not being rude, but i used a standard ethernet cable (rj45?). i connected it to my router and the Hallenberg IFA software found it whilst it was running on my laptop wirelessly. It then started uploading., I did this twice, once with the commando 12 image which uploaded, but I had problems with the scan and then again with the 11.3 image.
This was the reason I put this up, as for newbies it looks so complicated with having the right cable etc, but its not.
An ethernet to router allows ftp (via ftp program and explorer) and flashing via IFA from a computer connected to the same router.
You're right about the debug mode. Mine was in debug mode already.

i have Nutrino / sportar on my Dbox and we've lost limited channels hence dont know if N3 has hit full or not? - sounds much like what royhid said (i'm newb too) but have a few more than Free to Air channels. Anway my ? is can i follow step 1 and put commando on? - basically come-off sportstar / nutrino and install a commando image following step 1 :

I waited until I lost all channels apart from the free ones as I didnt want the risk of losing them all (wife would kill me).
Maybe u should wait till u have nothing to lose?

Seems like commando 12 'the final' what ever (or 11. x) seems like the way forward or we're stuck with doorstops.

Weird thing is mate 2 streets down lost all and i have limited coverage? - and he's ready to have a pop at trying commando - worth a punt me thinks.

Izme, Still working in warks, although I thought it had stopped due to the losing of channels. But the update worked, for now its running.
What image u have? also which box?

hello, just going back to izme initial question. i have a sporster image as well and want to upgrade to blade squad. is it just a matter of putting the image in /tmp and using the control to update?

I think as harienak74 said, you can place the image in your /tmp folder and do it via the dbox menu. I wen the long way round with IFA. I havent any experience of the dbox menu way, but alot of the guides tell you how to do it.

opps, sorry about that. well this is my first time imaging my box and obviously this never works first time (for me atleast). this is where it stands so far.
1. imaged with blade quad image from the download section.
2. had to change it from 2x to 1x using the converter also from the downloads page.
3. Set location to Leicester1 and did a scan and it came up with an error "No Channels were found. Please execute a scan (dbox button-> Service)". so i copied the services.xml, bouquets.xml and cable.xml to the new image in their appropriate places (checked from the old image) and did a scan after that. The scan worked however non of the channels had picture or sound.
4. I tried with Leicester2 location and it was the same for that.

Not entirely sure what could be the issue with this. I had to revert to the old sportster image where Sy sports works on that. Does anyone have any ideas where i can correct my steps? thank you.

Do a rescan first. Sometimes the channels move around a bit and a rescan will usually get them back
.
If your going to reflash another image make sure you back up your service files, roms and keys etc. So you can ftp them over to your new image.

You can connect you pc \ Laptop via your router either wireless or wired. Ftp the image into Var\ Tmp and use your remote to flash. Choose flash WITHOUT bootloader
