its been that long since i had a dbox.
but go into settings
AV settings
change to 16.9
and if you have a resolution option change to highest or 1080
scart = CVBS
try them settings
if it makes no difference then i would sugest changing the tv settings to movie mode, or whatever gives the best quality picture

Have a play about with the settings on your TV, i.e. brightness, contrast, etc. Search on avforums for the optimum settings.
By bro has a Samsung 42" plasma and a dbox and the pic is great, only because we set the tv up correctly and didn't go with the default settings.Comment

I have found that using a cheap scart causes a bad picture- one of the wires inside the scart cable gives a feed back from the tv to the device of what the tv is tuned to (used in some recorders for recording what is on screen). This feed back can leak to the feeds going to the TV from the dbox and cause interference.
As for the dolby sound, no uk cable channels have thisComment

you may find that the image that you are using is too old for the resolution the best i found was still the sportser pro to get any thing half decent in picture quality.
many times i have looked at the dbox pic and tought how bad but sometimes it is the quality of the program being broadcast.
I have since moved on to the dreambox for a better picture on the plasma.
But still really like my dbox so that is the bedroom set.Comment

If your TV has component inputs (YCbCr/YPbPr) you can try that too and see if it makes a difference. However, you need to build a custom cable for that, where the RGB pins on the SCART side correspond to CrYCb on the RCA side, respectively. You need to set your video out to YUV + (C)VBS. This setting works nicely on my friend's projector.
Edit: As for the 5.1 sound, the audio track needs to be set to AC3. Obviously not all channels provide that.Comment

scart leads used?
Hi as a TV engineer the type of scart lead (gold) does not make any difference at all; the lead that tells the TV the DBOX is on is pin 8 and can be cut which then allows you to switch between sources such as AV1 AV2 and so on
Dont buy a lead that costs more than ?10:00 as they do not cost a lot to makeComment

Just been playing about with a friend's box which has the Blade Quad image and I could swear the picture quality is better than mine which is running the Laky-Sylas one......may of just been imagining it but the missus thought it was better too.
It all depends on the station being broadcast as some channels look total pony on my 50" where as some are passable.Comment

I don't think gold plating makes a lot of difference to the picture but a good quality scart cable certainly will.
