you need to change your tcp/ip settings in your network connect settings.

never done dbox but presuming the ip address was 10.1.1.1 and default gateway was 101.1.1.2

Just go the TCP/Ip settings of the network connection on laptop and set it up like that.

        IP address: 10.1.1.2
        Subnet mask:255.255.255.0
        Default gateway: 10.1.1.1

Yes that is correct but watch there are 2 TCP/IPv6 and TCP/IPv4 in Vista choose TCP/IP4 in Network Connection properties

not sure with vista as i dont use it but should still be the same firstly do you have 2 monitors in the botom corner that shows your connection is active if so double click on that then click properties click on the configure then advanced then connection type where it states on the right value change to 10 base t half duplex then ok next you have to change ip address i use 192.168.1.1 you can do this as above from the click properties then scroll down to internet protocol (tcp/ip) click on that then click properties then click on use following ip like i stated above i use 192.168.1.1 subnet will fill itself as 255.255.255.0 default should be the same as your ip add 192.168.1.1 click ok make sure firewall and antivirus is turned off
hope this is of help just noticed above posts forgot about the ipv6 / ipv4 in vista but still the above should still help you in some way

there are short cuts to go to Network Sharing centre in Vista windows if this is your first time setting up your computer to flash images and FTP files to your Dbox here is the easy step by step to get there.

If you are using wireless then go to start / Control Panel /double click on Network and Sharing Centre.

                          1) In Network an Sharing Centre. you will see Local Area Conection and Wireless Conection.

                          2) Click right mouse button once on wireless conection a window will open click on desible.

                          3) Local Area Connection is already desibled.

                          4) Now click on right hand mouse button on Local area Connection and go to properties a window will open asking for your permision click on continue.

                          5) click on configure and click on advanced tub then highlight Link speed/Duplex mode and choose 10Mbps/Half duplex and click on OK button in the bottom of the page.

                          6)repeat step 4 as above

                          7) This time Highlite Internet Protocl version (TCP/IPv4) and click on properties a window will open click on (use the following IP address Radio Button) now type your Dbox IP address at the forth set or single number of the ip should be minust 1 ie: if Dbox IP address is

(192.168.1.5) then you should type (192.168.1.4) or if is (192.168.1.103) then type (192.168.1.102)

                          8) Just click in the sub net mask automaticaly will give you (255.255.255.0)
then click OK and this changes will be saved for you

                          9) Higlite Local Area Conection click right hand mouse on it a window will open then click on Enable

now your Laptop is ready to transfere or FTP your stuff to Dbox

                          10) open your ftp Client application and type the following info:

Host: is your Dbox IP address as in Dbox network
                          username: root
                          Password: dbox or dbox2

I hope this step by step how to set up PC/Laptop runing on Vista Windows will help you and anyone else.

                          Good luck from Salami

If your laptop can talk to your network, then it is a case of configuring the addresses on the independent dbox's to your laptop, also firewalls can also cause problems if not configured.

The way that I manage to connect to other mates Dboxes with my laptop without upsetting up my own home network was to get a cheap pmcia network card from Maplins for ?10, you can use your existing "straight" network cable with a small plugin "crossover adaptor" ?0.50p to plug in direct to the Dboxes, and when you need to change the TCP/IP adresses, you only have to change pmcia network card's TCP/IP settings, without upseting the setting your home network.
That way you can just plug the card in, upload any files onto Dboxes, unplug the card and job done...
