The way that I manage to connect to other mates Dboxes with my laptop without upsetting up my own home network was to get a cheap pmcia network card from Maplins for ?10, you can use your existing "straight" network cable with a small plugin "crossover adaptor" ?0.50p to plug in direct to the Dboxes, and when you need to change the TCP/IP adresses, you only have to change pmcia network card's TCP/IP settings, without upseting the setting your home network.
That way you can just plug the card in, upload any files onto Dboxes, unplug the card and job done...
Why should you buy PMCI card when you can do the job without it,
I am working with my Lappy without any card people want to save and do a job to fix Dbox without any extra expences M8.
if it works for me surely work for any one else.

If your laptop can talk to your network, then it is a case of configuring the addresses on the independent dbox's to your laptop, also firewalls can also cause problems if not configured.
Working with Vista don't need to interfere with Firewall or Antivirus that is the reason Vista always asking for your permission think about it if you are a Vista user. in Windows XP yes I am agree with you 100%.
