as subject, just built a new computer with a v.expensive mboard and it doesnt have a serial port!

I believe this is a common-ish problem - if you do a search thru the threads I think it mentions people get a usb to serial converter lead - have a wee look on the Maplins web site? -

Just go here serial port card, Computing, Consumer Electronics, Business, Office Industrial items at low prices on eBay.co.uk and buy one of these,very easy to install ...well worth buying one ....Comment
