Possible to test your connection before buying?

I have a very old cable connection box in my liv room, which my neighbour had a LOT of trouble with when virgin tried to connect him a few months ago.

Have, for no apparent reason, always thought the cable lines were in pairs - as the houses. Is there any way to check my connection is not damaged before I buy a box?

Or could i presume it works as would have fixed both?

Plug the coax directly into the back of the TV. If you get channels 1 to 5 its live. However I recommend you take out at least a minimum sub especially considering your neighbours problems.
I refuse to answer that question on the grounds that I don't know the answer. - Douglas Adams

As mentioned above, take out the MINIMUM subscritpion package and piggy back the boxes, so if there are any probs, and the Virgin one is also having probs, you can unplug the Eurovox and call em out to sort the prob - ten quid a month isnt too much for every channel they have in my book ;-)
