    Noobie

Hi All, new to Kaos, and am about to make the switch - credit crunch and all that

So a couple of questions that I could with some help on if anyone can help? I've have takena look for a 'getting started' sticky etc, but cant seem to find one?

    > I have a female coax point in my front room. I've been with SKY for the two years that I've lived in the house, and have never touched it, is this all I need to run a EuroVox 5100, or 7000 HD?

    > I've read a couple of threads that mention taking out the minimum VM package - is this essential?

Thanks for your help guys and if there is a getting started thread for noobies like me then please do chuck me a link?

    T'Phobe.

Before we send you in the right direction we need to figure out what you want to achieve first..

When you say you want to make the switch, do you mean from satellite tv to cable tv?

You want to use a Eurovox to watch satellite or cable TV?

You seem to have a satellite dish for your Sly subsciption etc, but has cable tv ever been connected to your property?

The female Coax point in your front room, is it threaded (known as an 'F' type) for a screw on cable or just a straight forward socket for pushing a coax cable into etc? Do you have catv connected to your property?

I assume it is cable TV you are talking about from your last question... Basically it is encouraged that you at least get a minimum subsciption to the provider other wise if the don't get enough money they will go the same way as Ondigital did a few years back and then go out of business. This therefore leaves no service at all for anybody. Money also helps the provider upgrade there channel selection and other services, so if they just get ripped off completely then the ride will stop for everybody.

A eurovox will pick up the channels you like and are familiar with and is an easy box to start with.. Each user with have their own preferences as to the best type of box etc.. After a while if you feel more confident with the subject and want to do more with your box then you can move into the 'opensource' boxes which are linux based, but that is for the future as at the moment we are concerned in getting you started.

So if the services are connected to your property and you buy a box you will need to 'flash' onto it new 'firmware', tutorials for this are available, then you will be able to receive channels. If you read the 'stickys' in red at the top of the forum sections these will give you vaulable pointers and info on how to progress once you have a box.

If you need help with any of the terminology then have a look in here.. http://www.digital-kaos.co.uk/forums...ssary_of_terms

Don't be afraid to ask any questions as you work your way though it, we are here to help and it does not take long anyway...

        Many Thanks both.

Caveman in answer to your questions...

When I say the switch I basically mean from paying ?80 pm to SKY to not I have Full TV, Phone and BB with sky and with a couple of movies a month this is a substantial bill. Movies, Sport and Sky1 are my essential channel needs - Couldn't do without LOST

The female connection point is just a 'push fit' with no thread - is this acceptable?

How can I tell if the cable services are indeed connected? - I'm sure the prior owner used to have NTL?

Thanks again for all yoru help peeps!

        TP

As Alex said, unless the previous owner fitted a standard coax plate himself there's no way that you have a cable point, none of the cable suppliers would have set it up that way.

How have you used the aerial set-up in the past?
