com ports finding love with my eurovox

Listened to the game as my box is sick. I have a eurovox and I have read most of the threads i can on how to update the firmware. (i have just found key master so this is just an exercise now, but I want to make sure i dont have to update comnstantly as well). I have bought a eurovox 5000 pvr and it worked well up to feb but then it has nt. I have bought a rs232 cable but it didnt fit so i bought a usb adapter which then fitted onto one end, then i installed driver that came with this cable. I tried downloading the firmware update, which was fine but then when i tried to download to the eurovox it said " wiating for response". Now I have since trawled through lots of stuff telling me how to find my com port. Now is where i am stuck, I cannot get the comport to find my eurovox. I have switiched on and off I have tried left clicking on device manager but all to no avail. I am using windows xp. I am getting very frustrated at my lack of progress. when in device manager should i be able to see eurovox listed? I think it is plugged into com port 3 because wheni do the download on the other ports it immediately says no device found but on com port 3 it looks for a while. However, when i unplug and replug ithe eurovox com port 1 changes. I am not a computer boffin by any stretch of the immagination. but i would love to figure this out as it is now a problem. Sorry for this ridiculously long post but from reading other peoples ( and i must have read around 60 on this subject) more information is always asked for!
    any help gratefully recieved.

I am off to bed now but shall be returning tomorrow at 6, to continue the good fight. ( and addle my brian some more!!

I presume you are using the null modem cable together with the USB adapter cable. Did you read here also http://www.digital-kaos.co.uk/forums...-eurovox-9786/

I refuse to answer that question on the grounds that I don't know the answer. - Douglas Adams
