it means put software into box via computer with null modem cable

you flash your software to all the young ladies and you say "hey put this in your box" and suddenly it changes to hardware.

on a more serious note it means you download a file from your computer to whatever box you have, this updates the free to view firmware on your box to a new firmware that will enable you to view a lot more channels than the free to view ones
