Are you using xp or vista micro45? You might have an ordinary rs232 cable, what you need is a Null Modem rs232.

This is what you need plus a null modem cable.

You may need a driver, just google your cable model number and search for a driver windows can be fussy sometimes.
                  Keep calm carry on.

when you have the driver installed make sure you go into Device Manager that the usb-RS232 gets the COM1 port this is done by going to Device Manager go down to the ports (COM & LPT) right click on the USB>Properties goto the Ports tab and click on Advances then change the COM port to COM1. (It may say In Use in which case find the one using COM1 and change it onto a different COM.)
