How should boxes be setup?!

Hello,

i'm fairly new to all this and i've just got a quick question about the recommended setup.

I have virgin cable TV and internet. The cable box on the wall has a two way splitter which splits the cable to cable modem and the virgin box.

Is it safe to just disconnect the virgin box and connect my eurovox? or should I use a three way splitter and always keep my virgin box connected at the same time?

I tried to find this answer using the search but couldnt find anything :-(
