I thought it was just me that had a bad flash on the latest beta ex1100 firmware, but it appears a few people are suffering from an 'AV kill prob' that occurs on some boxes after a bad firmware flash.
If you are unfortunate to get the AV Kill Prob on your box from a firmware flash, you will get these symptoms after:
Your box will display one channel correctly (probably a music channel) and as soon as you press any button on your remote, the AV signal is killed and the box becomes unresponsive to anything pressed on the remote (your TV will look like the scart is not plugged in).
THE FIX
As the box is non-responsive, there is no way you can access the menu screen to re-flash. You therefore have to use the EX1100 loader software and re-flash with a rs232 null modem cable (female to female serial cable).
STEP By STEP Instructions to solve AV Kill Prob:
1, Download this software EX1100USB_UPG_TOOLS.rar from this link Eurovox - Folder Shared from Box.net - Free Online File Storage , or google ex1100 usb loader to get the file elsewhere.
2, Borrow/buy/use a serial cable (rs232 null modem cable) and use a computer that has a serial port on the back.
3, Copy the old firmware that previously worked for you onto the computer (the computer with the serial port).
4, Plug the serial cable into the eurovox box and into the other end into your serial port on computer, then turn your box on (from the wall).
5, On your PC, go into 'Control Panel' -> 'Device Manger' and make sure the serial port is set to 'bits per second' 115200. Also make sure 'Parity' is 'None' (although that should be default). Also note the 'Com' port that it says is being used.
6, Load the upgrade.exe (from the downloaded software mentioned above) and set '115200' as the bit rate (matching the same as in 'Device manager') and Parity: None, also set the 'Com' port matching that in 'Device Manager' (probably Com 1) then click 'connect'.
7, The loader software on your PC will say 'Sync to serial..' and if all good, a few seconds later a new menu will appear. From this menu select 'maincode' and then point to your old firmware on the computer. This will load your old firmware back on the box and will work the same as it did before.
8, Now your box is back working, you can use the menu again. Go into 'Tools' -> 'Factory Setting' -> 'Erase All Channels'. Also repeat the process and select 'Factory Setting' -> 'Factory Setting' to get your box clean (to be sure the flash doesn't fail again).
9, Finally, use the 'upgrade by usb' and the latest firmware again (that caused the problem first time around) and it should flash fine this time around. You'll need to rescan for the channels again but you'll have an instant full EPG and other improvements from the firmware you were originally using.
TROUBLESHOOTING
If, when you press 'connect' on the ex1100 loader software (with cable from your PC to 'turned on' box) you see 'Sync to serial..' then nothing happens after 30secs (and eventually says a target error message), there is a setting problem that is blocking the signal from your PC to the box.
Possible causes of this blocked signal could be:
1, The settings on your PC (for the serial port) don't match the settings on the loader.
Use the 'Device Manager' on your PC to check the settings (Com port, Bits per second, parity) and match them with the loader software. In my case, I changed the default 9600 bit rate in Device Manager on PC to 115200 (as 9600 rate didn't ping a connection).
2, You are using a USB to Serial adapter
I've only come across 1 person who has successfully used a USB to Serial adapter with ex1100 loader. Find an old PC that has a serial port instead. Forget USB to Serial adapters. They didn't work for me and there are other examples of them not working on these forums.
3, Read forums on the purple light problem/fix eg 1100 purple light fix topic. The purple light problem isn't the same as AV Kill Problem but the fix process is the same.
