Choosing correct cable, and loop output Help please

Got a Eurovox EX5000 PVR box with a male RS232 connection on the back, my laptop does not have RS232, looked on ebay for the correct cable USB to female RS232, but cannot find one. there is a usb to rs232 male cable with a female to female gender changer with it, can someone advise if this will be ok as I would prefer to use my laptop to connect to my box. I do have a PC with a 9 pin com port upstairs in my bedroom so i could use that and buy the null modem cable, Help is gratefully recieved

Also I would like to have the tv in my bedroom connected as well as downstairs, I have a coax up to there already, can i connect this to the loop output on the back of my box downstairs and buy a second box for the bedroom or should i split the incoming signal before it goes into the box downstairs
