i have downloaded new firmware for eurovox do i follow steps for flashing eurovox. upload channels and put back in later.

Yes, the process is called 'flashing', you flash the firmware to the receiver.

How do you transfer the data between your PC and the box? i read something about an RS232 cable but is this hard to get hold of or would i be able to get one at the local PC Shop?

you need an rs232 serial cable and if your pc hasnt got a serial output then you'l need a usb to serial adapter maplins sell both
