cant comment on the 1000, but my 5000 gives no probs, and accepts firmware easy with no hassle.

I have the ex5000 with 120 gb hdd , Ive had no problems recording or pausing live tv . The only downside i think is it only has a single tuner and the hdd is a tight fit. Other than that the ex5000 is a superb box and i would fully recommend.
